Tyler, if you decide to check the compression, you can get a diesel compression test kit at Harbor Freight for $25-$30. They're plenty good for what you're needing. I'd test in the glow plug hole, since you said you had them removed.

I don't really think you have a lack of compression problem. Most engines don't just instantly quit starting because of lack of compression. It's usually wear that take place over a long period of time. It's very possible your engine is just not turning over fast enough to fire off. You've mentioned you have a good battery and jumped it and it doesn't make much difference. Maybe your starter is dragging, taking too much juice, and just not doing it's job. If you think that sounds correct, the slow turning over, you can remove the starter and take it to a shop that rebuild starters and just have them test it. If necessary they could rebuild it at much less cost then usually.

Not being critical (just trying to help) when you communicate in writing use punctuation, like periods and commas. It just help when reading to separate the various thoughts. It will probably get more folks giving you ideas also.

I had the starter rebuilt when all this started because it was giving me problems before hand. but it didn't make any difference

also just a thought. could it be the flywheel

You mentioned in post #19. "it seems like something is draining the battery noticed the negative is getting hot fast"

Have you removed the battery ground cable where it attached to the tractor frame and cleaned the cable end and the frame of all rust and paint? You have some resistance in the wiring somewhere and that is causing the heat you mentioned. Maybe you need to replace the postive and negative battery cables to eliminate the loss there.

Oh, by the way, a 1988 tractor is NOT an old one!:laughing:

hope I answer all the questions again thanks for helping I have loosened all fuel lines going to pump and all have fuel coming out I replaced both battery cables and cleaned the ground have hooked 2 batteries up to it that arnt very old even with jumper cables hooked up to them to another battery that was running I will say if you turn the lights on when trying to start it they flicker but tractor till turns over I had used the tractor for about 30 min with a scraper blade grading my driveway and put it back in garage when closing my garage door the door broke and couldn't open it was 2 weeks before I got it fixed so the tractor set for that long had changed oil about a month before didn't change fuel filter cause it wasn't do yet and didn't seem dirty hope this helps and have tested voltage at the starter and its 12.5 but just setting not trying to start

Did you look in intake system for a mouse nest, maybe if its getting fuel and has compression, maybe its not getting enough air....

What you just posted in thread #47 is old news. Did you clean the negative battery cable where it attaches to the tractor frame? If not do so.

You do not need to remove the fuel lines coming into the injection pump. You need to remove the lines right at the injectors. Then with throttle full on, spin the starter to get all the air out of the lines. Don't go over 15 seconds at a time. You have to let the starter cool off our you'll ruin it. But you have to isolate the cause of the heated ground wire before messing with the rest of it.

i cleaned the ground at frame

" But you have to isolate the cause of the heated ground wire before messing with the rest of it."

Often heated cables or wires suggest internal corrosion but for sure it can't carry the amperage it should to drive the starter at correct speed.

For how little it costs, install a new ground cable, and be sure that there is good bare metal where the ground cable is attached.

Crappy corroded cables (wire) will carry voltage but not amperage and a starter wants lots of amps!
Just might be the cause.

YES!!!!!

Also if engine is not solidly bolted to frame (as it should be) is there a ground jumper from frame to engine block....

IF it were me, I would run new ground cable from battery to any bolt holding starter to bell housing or engine block...

marine grease prevents this problem from occurring in the first place, it keeps the moisture out, and because of it's formulation, the grease never dries out, and is very resistant to even rain..

My preference is either dielectric grease, or NO-OX-ID compound...
