Tractor won't start

If this is a hi-jack, let me know and I'll start a new thread...

My Dad bought a new lawn tractor to replace his old MTD 18HP. As long as he wasn't using the MTD, I figured I'd take it and try to get it running. Figured I could always use it to haul a cart, or let the kids drive it around.

Anyway, the MTD won't turn over. After going through a couple of batteries, my Dad had the charging system was replaced a few years ago. I have a strange feeling the current problem is electrical also. (no pun intended)

Just wondering if it would be possible to weld a pully to the flywheel nut on top of the engine and use a pull cord to start the tractor. Since it's now an 'extra' tractor, I don't really want to put any money into it. And with a pull cord, the kids would not be able to get it running without my help, so I would be sure to supervise their use.

Thanks,
Doug

Usually there is a cup that bolts on with the flywheel bolt that you wrap the ropre around, thats a no-weld solution.
You could weld a pulley on there, but it would be hard to get the nut off it you ever need to.

I haven't had a chance to work on this too much yet, but I did pull the deck off. Just thinking I could use the pully that drives the mower blade belt for a pull start...
