My very first smartphone is the Samsung Galaxy S4 - works great. It has the same drawback as all smartphones, in that it's as large as a pie plate :)

I just got a new Samsung Galaxy 4S this weekend, and it is blazing fast. Can be a bit intimidating with all the features, but I like it so far. Plus I can see it much better than my old phone. The old eyes aren't getting any sharper!

It seems like most of the REAL DURABLE cases that make all the outlandish claims are only offered on the i-phone or samsung platform. I've checked on the Mil Spec phones and even saw where CAT made a smartphone in Europe. The B15 looked pretty bada$$. Haven't seen one over on this side of the pond though.

Maybe they should offer a phone-implant directly into your hand. Probably just a matter of time for that.

Wow, I especially like the comment "safe for use in explosive environments".

A smart phone generally comes in 3 flavors, Droid, Iphone, WIndows 8. A Samsung phone uses Droid software, just modified (Droid software is made be Google, and is considered open source or people can do with it what they want). It is a solid platform, more popular in sales than Iphone. But it can get some bugs as the quality control of the software offered is vendor predicated. Iphone is a mac based phone, very popular. A solid platform but an expensive platform. Windows 8 is new. Reviews have been positive. Applications have been slow in coming, and it does not play well with any system outside of a Windows 8 system.

I am a mac guy, very computer savvy. But I like my Droid. I have a motorola RAZR MAXX which I bought at a time when battery life was uber important to me.

Most expensive new phones (Motorola Droid RAZR and above, Samsung Galaxy, Windows 8 phones offer a certain level of water resistance. as well as drop resistance. Not much crush resistance.

Generally getting splashed with a hose is about as far as an unprotected modern phone can go. Forget submersion. Screens tend to break on all the phones. Mine has gorrilla glass, but I welded next to it (my phone was in my pocket) and the slag pock marked the screen.

On Amazing Race, we were provided otter boxes for our phones and pads as the gear took a beating. The screens came back scratched to heck but the machines still worked. Many reports of them being taken for a swim. or being dropped from great heights. But, a smack on the screen and it was all over but the crying. BUT these protective covers add weight and size, and a certain level of stickiness that makes them hard to pull out of your pocket.

So in conclusion, put your hand on all three softwares, find the one that fits you the best (if you are technically challenged, probably the Iphone is your best choice IMO - If you are computer savvy, a droid. If you are a risk taker on something brand new out of the box that looks pretty cool, Microsoft)). Buy the latest models (probably $200 to $300 with credit from your mobile company). Get yourself a protective case, but know what you are buying when you do (just don't settle on the one that is pink cause your wife likes the color). Make sure it covers your concerns.

In the end, either you will loose the phone or loose it to a cracked screen (which can be replaced now adays for around $100). Not much you can do when you are climbing into the tractor, it drops out of your pocket and you drive over it with some ground turning implement or a brush hog running full bore.

Hope my opinion helps.

whatever smartphone you get, you might want to look into otter cases for it if you plan to be in rough conditions alot.

I like otter cases but some have drawbacks. I have a defender series for my galaxy s3, it's a strong-feeling case, but has a built-in screen protector that degrades screen clarity/vibrance and adds tons of glare. I bought this one because it came with a belt clip as the phone is just too big for a pocket imho. The clip broke after about three months when I caught the phone on a doorway. Otter replaced it but it was a hassle. A month later it broke again, and it was easier to buy one from ebay for $7 than go through otter again. I've had it for about a week now... we'll see how long it lasts.

If you don't need the clip, I would suggest the commuter series and a good seperate, replaceable screen protector. The wife has one and it seems as sturdy as mine.

There are probably other good cases as well, these are just the one's I have experience with.

iPhone with a Lifeproof case. Going on two years now with mine. It's been dropped, in the ocean, in the pool, in the river, hit concrete, ceramic tile and the occasional blacktop parking lot. **** near indestructible in the Lifeproof case, pretty fragile out of it.

Jeez, and all I have is a $2 piece of plastic clipped around the back of my 920 to protect it. Fell from roof to compact gravel, fell multiple times onto concrete from 5'-6', toilet, ran over, left in a snow storm over night, what ever, and not even a scratch.. :confused3:
