B7500.... do you have anya additional acreage for "flyover" or are you limited to the 20 acres? Some of the planes on your website are awesome!! Really nice job on the pole barn.

theonlybull...... you picked an excellent trainer to start out with. I've seen lots of folks who have run r/c boats and cars and then think they can fly any electric plane out there....and it usually isn't pretty after that. My first plane was a Carl Goldberg MkIV 56 shoulder wing trainer. Ran a OS .40 APC tri-blade prop and Davis Diehls muffler.... that thing was quiet, about 76 decibels if I remember correctly. I was Vice President of a local club of 120 members for a couple of years but had to wind up giving the hobby up. I've still got plans of a scratch built plane called the "Vamp" which is a twin boom single engine plane that I would love to get around to building. I've always enjoyed the building aspect which goes way back to stick and tissue days.

Danny.... you may want to look into "backyard" flyers by picking up a magazine at the local bookstore called "Backyard Flyers". These are small planes, mostly electric, that can be flown in areas the size of ballfields. BUT..... anybody considering flying r/c should without a doubt.... join the AMA. They provide insurance that will protect you in the event the unmentionable happens plus they have an excellent magazine that's included in the subscription price. The magazine covers all aspects of the hobby.... trainers, sport, heli's, pattern, scale, indoor etc. Good luck and let us know when you get into it.

probably then biggest problem with my attempt at flying right now....... i race r/c trucks, and have a boat as well, and i discovered that flying takes a much gentaler inputs.....

the fact that there is no local flying club around here doesn't help. and the grass strip that they used to fly from when i started building the plane has long since dissapeared..

i've had my hands on fullsized planes, and helios, but of course they are far from an r/c plane....

i've gotta take it a little slower (os .40 really moves this plane on pavement) and try some finer imputs, and i'll be fine.. just gotta patch this wing back up, and try her again.

the pt-40 really wanted to fly, it was smooth, stable, and would climb like crazy, till some fool try to control it lol

Does the AMA cover any flying not done at officially recognized AMA flying sites. From what I understand if I decide to fire one of my planes up in my yard or the local school I'm on my own as far a liability goes. I've never looked into this as it isn't an issue for me but I've read things on RC sites that lead me to believe this is true.

Here's a picture of my dining room table.....I have an understanding wife /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Jeff396....I believe the insurance covers accidents from the operation of the model, regardless of where you are, subject to the fact if you were operating in accordance with the National Safety Codes. The prvious link mentioned was dead so I have posted the correct link. You can click on the link for membership services and at the bottom is the AMA documents which will have a lot of information on the insureance. Most if not all clubs will require you to be a member of the AMA before being admitted to the club. The insurance is in excess of what you may already have in place i.e. homeowners etc. Hope this helps. Nice plane by the way... I'm rusty but is that a Pitts special?

Hmmmm, you learn something new everyday. I've never flown at a place other that an AMA field but I just assumed that's all it covered.

Yes, that's a Pitt's special. It's an old Midwest kit I picked up in the early 80's and have just gotten around to building. It's only recently that my flying skills could even hope to handle a plane like this so it sat. It's definitely a builders kit as there is much shaping, soldering and guessing at what needs to be done. At this point the wings are covered but I still need to finish covering the fuselage and painting the ABS parts. I'm just hoping it doesn't take a dirt nap on its first flight! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Here's a picture on another kit I have that I'm getting ready to start. It's a Laird Super Solution which is a racer from the 30's. It was flown by Jimmy Doolittle and I guess it did fairly well. He commented that they had a good bit of trouble keeping the wings set with the rigging though. The picture is from the website of where I bought my kit.

You must be a rare breed of R/Cer... one that loves to build, particularly with all the ARF/RTFs out there. To me building was my favorite part.... I actually built several planes, had them test flown by club instructors and then sold them.

I just love the character and nostalgia of those older planes. My favorite though is the Vought F4U Corsair.

if you ask, building is the best part, i'd rather build then spend the $$ on buying a arf/rtr. i started in with old tamiya kits, and loved them, the plane was different, but i'd enjoy building another, even more then i would flying.... lol

Poncho,

We only have the 20 acres that most of the time is sufficient. However, if a pilot strays beyond that he will be flying over corn fields that the local farmers always give us permission to retrieve crashed airplanes from without a problem.
