I was splitting wood today and noticed a mustard color yellow in some of the wood. This is a red oak I think, probably a shingle oak. Anybody know what the yellow color is?

I figured it was some early stage of rot and here what I found.

Yellow discolouration of European and American white oak might be caused by a fungi infection (paecilomyces variottii). This was shown by Professor Bauch in Germany in 1991. The discolouration only occurs in heartwood, though the fungi also live in sapwood. The actual colouring substance is assumed to be the result of some kind of reaction between the fungi and extractives naturally occurring in the heartwood.

Interesting, it was in the heartwood. It was a large tree also that appeared to be dying before it fell over.

I had tried a search and just found info on the leaves turning yellow or wood that was naturally yellow. I wonder if this is what’s killing a lot of the oaks.

A couple weeks ago I was looking for something to do in the shop and I made this out of a short piece of cutting edge from a snow groomer that I had. I had the idea of being able to place some log beams across a small brook for a bridge I want to build next summer.

Someone asked me if it would work for blocking up firewood. So I tried it today. Just an experiment. I used a 30' long beech 9" at the butt with a 6" top. No problem lifting it with a 2000 lb FEL but it is a lot of cantilevered weight. A little bouncy driving forward.

I have a set of grab hooks welded to the bottom of the grapple tines. I made a "V" hitch. The choker is 5' up from the butt.

I thought the tree might swing side to side but with that "V" the tree is very stable. I had to push pretty hard on it to make it move to the side and it came back to center w/o oscillating.

The grapple sat on the ground while I plowed yesterday after 1.5" of rain followed by 5" of snow and a quick freeze. It grew a pair of ice slippers that won't come off w/o an axe. :)

No problem at all cutting my 18" blocks. I put one under the butt for it to settle on when I went by the balance point.

Had to make 3 more cuts after I unhooked the choker and backed away.

So it works fine. Cut 20 18" blocks.

So I am trying to figure this out. Do you have a hitch receiver on the front of tractor Gordon? Never saw one.

Gordon - exactly where did you weld your grab hooks on to your grapple? I have a similar grapple and have been trying to decide where to put some.

Hi John - I thought I had a picture but I can't find it. I'll take one in the morning and post it.

I put a shackle lug under there and welded a grab hook to it.

Green tractor and Husky saws are resting in the barn. My back hurts. I got a lot of firewood in the last few days. This is where the rest of it goes. The big logs are Ponderosa Pine, which I won't use in the wood stove. I'm debating on lighting this off now, or letting the critters winter in there and burning it in the spring. Thoughts?

Not firewood, but logs and wood. I loaded up 10 logs with my TC-30. The two largest ones it could barely pick up. They were around 24".

I took them to my friend who has a very nice Wood Miser and came home after 3 hours of work.

This piece was pretty typical of what I brought home. 6 of the logs were Ash like this piece.

My plan is to mill it into flooring for our house after it dries.

That should make some beautiful flooring!
