Question on the hole you cut for the jack. I understand how to cut the front, back, top and bottom.. but then how do you get the block of wood out? just bash it with a maul or something?

They meet in the center so the block will be loose one trick is to bore in again for a little larger kerf, use your axe with the cutting edge to stick into the block, or you can use wedges to get them out. If the double rams are going in the seat is done differently but it’s roughly the same idea.

so then it is a "pie wedge" cut into the tree, yes?

Not always sometimes it’s a block it really depends on the situation and what the tree needs.

I cut some fire wood this morning. Here's a beech afflicted with beech bark disease.

It was about 30* with wet flurries that made the snow stick to everything. I added a second log to the hitch as I went up the trail. Kept going like that

Until pulling into the landing and dropping the hitch.

Bucked it up into 20 something foot pieces and added it to the pile.

That's some nice hemlock Eric and you have what seems to me a perfect reason to cut it !

If you had nothing to burn except beech that size your winters would stay warm. 👍
That's the sized wood I like to cut. Easy to handle and while I do have a splitter it also splits nicely with a maul.
