The ticks cause that. They rub against trees trying to get the blood thirsty buggers off, ending up with spots in their fur. I've seen them nearly bare, and when it starts raining they can't stay warm and die. You wouldn't think that such a small pest could kill such a big animal, but they do.

Twenty years ago did we deal with ticks on this level? I feel like we didn't.

Got started cutting up and splitting the trees I had taken down near my house. Douglas fir. Skeans mentiined a while back that as the Doug Fir trees out here get older they harden up. Note the wide growth rings when young that change to narrow when older. That explains his comment.

Anyone use these? I always seem to end up with a few pieces of firewood in the woodpile that are too large for my stove and rather than digging out a maul and wedge I toss the pieces to the side. Plus I can't seem to aim a maul worth a siht any more and miss the wedge more than not. This would be nice to hang in the woodshed and use when I need it.

Splitting the trees next to the house that I had taken down, I found the remnants of what I assume was a clothesline anchor. Sure glad I missed this when I was cutting rounds. Tree had healed it over, I did not know it was there.

That's why sawmill owners don't like to buy logs from landscape trees; you never know what you will find. Sometimes that black stain will be down in the lower end of the section, telling yo something's amiss.

That guy looks like a project, why not just throw it back on the splitter?

The splitter is ran out of fuel put away for the winter at that point. It would be a one-off split.

Interesting, my splitter is always full of fuel (and Stabil) and ready to go.
