Trader Mouse?

I remember as a kid hearing of a trader mouse. I now have one, no joke! I have pigeon holes off my work bench with misc. screws, nails, pencils, and such in them. The other day no pencils but a pine cone where they were. Just trashed the cone not thinking anything about it.
Today I moved my 3 pt. tiller out of the barn. Under it was 3 pencils, 5 pine cones, two 3 in. pieces of #2 gauge wire I remember cutting off a week ago on the other side of the barn.
My wife thinks the trader mouse "rat" is a myth. Can anyone back me up?

Out here in the Arizona desert the pack rat is notorious for "trading" things. Maybe one of them has moved east?

yep heard of them out west too. also there is a bird that does it, raven or something similar which takes anything shinny...

rumors abound about them taking keys and such off picknick tables ect. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
