Trading 2520 for 790

Roy , I am sorry buddy.
but you can talk til your blue in the face.
a 790 is a fine tractor. but any way you slice it.
a man that sells a 2520 and buys a 790 is going down hill
and backing up. ;)

when you sell a 15000$ dollar tractor
to buy a 11000$ dollar tractor. that ant going up hill....

That would be like someone selling a 3320 to buy a 3205
and thinking he is going up hill...

as i said earlier , I sure dont mean you any disrepect
but you just keep on.

Chris....:)

These are really dealing with two separate issues, that _sorta_ dovetail into one another.

One - you got a lemon. And although lawyers and all may not be your way of doing things, lemon laws exist for just this kind of situation. You're not being letigious, you're just taking action to get what you deserve and paid for (a product that's not defective).

Two - some confusion / reappraisal wrt. which kind of tractor to own. Forget about the nomenclature of trading "up" or "down", the question is, do you want a manual-style ("rustic"?) tractor like the 90 series, or one with rubber decking and an HST like the 2xxx? Neither is "better"; they just cater to different clientele.

The upshot is, your lemon situation puts you in a position to do a "do-over", and re-think the manual/HST question. If you decide you want to keep the 2520, then fight like he!! to get it fixed, at their expense. Whatever you think about "lawyering up", we are talking about consumer protection, after all.

If you determine that, in retrospect, you would have gotten a 790, then propose to "meet them in the middle". So there's about a $2000 difference between them, right? Well, to take into account the 30 hours on the 2520, and to "swallow" the decision to buy it (rather than the 790) in the first place, split the difference, and tell them you'll take the 790 and $1000 in trade for the 2520. Remind them that this will also make their problems regarding an irate customer with a leaking tractor go away, at least for now.

Oh my God,

You guys are killing me here. If Dan would really rather have a 790 after all, fine. HST vs Gear, blah blah. I still think the only single real issue here is whether JD is going to continue to stand behind their products or not. "Lawyer-Up"? What is this, CSI. Lemon laws were invented to deal with problems with used cars (and then new ones). Why the he!! should we need lemon laws to get a problem fixed on a JD tractor? This is a company that back in 1960 took back every single one of their junky 8010's (OK 99 out of 100 made, I guess one owner said " no thanks, I'm good") and rebuilt them into 8020's. For those of you you who don't know the 8010 was JD's very first monster 4WD, 200+hp, articulated machine. This must have cost a huge chunk of money back then, and now in 2007 they won't fix a serious problem on one lousy 2520?? I'm working mine pretty darned hard. Will it last 20 yrs (or over 50 like most of the tractors in Dan's stable)? I don't know. All I know, is if something breaks or leaks I shouldn't need to hire a legal team to get it fixed.

For farts and giggles, let's say Dan In Ohio trades in him problematic 2520 for a trouble free 790.

If Dan in Ohio goes on to experience years of trouble free operation on a 790 compared to his 2520, then couldn't one say the 790 was the better tractor?

While some will say the 2520 is better and some will say the 790 is better, the end of the day the machine that last the longest without issues is the better machine.

I sort of understand where Daninohio is coming from, he invested all this money in the marketed mighty 2520 and has had nothing but troubles I can totally understand why he might be willing to trade into a machine with a proven track record of being durable and bullet proof.

Some users here forget when a tractor is in a repair shop it can cost the owner alot more money in lost time, meaning some users need a tractor to make a living and down time can be more expensive than the repair bill itself.

Either way good luck DaninOhio and hope it turns out for the better.

A solid working trouble free tractor is the best tractor going.

My 820 is simple and still works as well now as it ever did. The difference in simplicity between an older simple tractor and a new hydrostatic more complex tractor is well taken. BUT, I would say that everyday chores using a boxblade or fel is much simpler for the operator with the new hydrostatic tractors. It isn't a matter of not being experienced in using gear transmissions as I have used all of them, but if you are trying to compete and make a living operating tractors the newer tractors will give you an edge with increased productivity.

I came thisclose to trading my 770 for a 2520 about a year ago when they were "on sale." Thought about it long and hard. In the end, I decided to keep my 770.

My 770 has roughly 2700 hours on it and everything runs as it should, therefore....I kept it.!!:D
