Tractor
TYM T394
Has anyone ran into the issue of dealers not accepting trades on certain brands of tractors? I have contacted two dealers and neither would accept a trade of a TYM tractor.

Is it a T394 with cab or ROPS? In todays hot market I'd say clean it up and advertise it privately. You'd sell it within the week, well it would also help if we'd known your geographical location etc etc. The T394 come with the Yanmar 3C88 engine, here is a link to sales adds on Tractorhouse

Mahindra sells alot of rebranded TYM so they should take it? I think yours is a mahindra 4010, tell the sales guy there that's what your tractor is and they will know what it is atleast. Probably they will give you some story about it being worth less than a 4010, but that's the stealership game!
I'm sure the local green dealer or other orange dealer wouldn't give me a fair value for my tractor either, if they take it at all, but that's part of the deal with trying to trade competitors tractors at most dealers

I would try to sell it on the open market also.

Demand is still pretty high around here.

Years ago when I upgraded my tractor I traded it in. I remember that I had to convince him to take the trade. He had a bunch of older stuff laying around on his lot. It was a family business; nice guy. I gave him lots of business.

Agree with the posters above though - you would probably come out ahead by listing it on Craigslist or sticking it at the rnd of your driveway with a for sale sign on it. That’s what I plan to do when it’s time to get rid of my remaining stuff.

When I was shopping last month my local dealer said he would take my tractor I bought from him on trade but he wouldn't give me much of anything for it
Needles to say I bought privately and I'll sell privately.

It's a Cab model with Del Morino 72" finish mower and a 7' sno way plow with third function. I live in Northwestern Pennsylvania and one dealer was in western New York and the other dealer was outside of Pittsburgh. Both were Yanmar dealers. Thank you guys for the feedback.

I have been in many tractor dealerships over the years and none have been what i would consider friendly or very helpful, When it comes to trading they are just like car dealers, My son took his 2009 chevy avalanche Ltz with 140,ooo miles in to look at a new truck , They offered him 3500, He laughed and left , Lots of crooks out there.

No offense but that's apples and oranges. The market for old Farmall one row tractors is off the charts. The value of them is sky high.

Dealers will only take trades in stuff they can sell and also make a profit on.

Put a Kubota sticker on your TYM it will sell faster.

When I had a situation like a trade in come up during a sale, heres what I would suggest to the customer.
Leave your tractor here at the dealership and we will sell it for you on consignment.
We would pressure wash and clean up the tractor for the customer (no charge) and put it with the rest of the machines for sale.
Of course we only did this if they bought a new machine from us, but in the end it was a win for both.

I traded my 5310 in when I got my 5090. It was sold before I could get it off the trailer.

I won't criticize the OP for not wanting to retail it. I'd say that's not all that fun job for many folks. Some here have given good alternatives to selling it yourself.

Yes, sell it outright yourself. You will get a lot more for it than a trade in. When I wanted to upgrade a few years ago, my dealer was only going to give me $10K trade in value. I sold it myself within a week for $18K (Basically what I paid for it 2 years earlier).

I could not fault the dealer. He took the time to explain how he got to the 'low' figure.... He would have to sell it at least $1500-2000 less than the same 'new' tractor just to get customer interest. He then said that he would probably have to negotiate with any prospective customers, possibly knocking off another $1K off the price or to discount other services. Then have to pay sales commission, then there is the overhead of the showroom/ service areas. Then, of course, any 'profit' above and beyond any costs of the dealership. Definitely more reasons are behind low 'trade in values'.

In today's market, one would think the dealerships could sell anything without too much difficulty, but the same market is almost changing on a daily basis. Getting dealers to change how they do business is almost impossible.

Good luck to you!

Sometimes things work better one way than the other. I bought the Ford back in '91 before selling the first tractor (Cub 154 LoBoy). Sold the Cub privately NP.

Was planning on selling a Kubota B7500 privately when I bought the L3200. I had a price in mind and when the dealer saw the B7500 he offered me a little less than I planned to sell it for. Since PA has a 6% sales tax and we could count the B7500 as a trade, the difference in the tax made it nearly a wash without having to deal with a private sale.

Spent a long time looking for a clean factory-cabbed tractor of 40 or more HP when the L4240 appeared at a used tractor dealer where a BIL had bought his a couple years earlier. Jumped on the L4240 and hung onto the L3200 for about a year before selling it privately.

I bought one and drive it now for five hundred, so be easy calling others crooks.
