Where I work it's as if 95% of my coworkers have had a smart phone implant... the break room use to be lively and now it is almost silent with everyone texting away... same between cases.

I agree, see at least one car a minute during commute on a hand held cell... they are easy to spot because they and not paying attention to the road...

Not owning a cell phone it is easy to say it is something I have not done.

There is an entire movement to squeeze every last cent possible from the public... both for violations and non-violations like paying $180 annual license fee for my 1985 Chevrolet Van.

For the first time water waste/failure to conserve now comes with a $500 fine... mandatory residential restrictions are in place with a 30% target reductions... to compensate... water rates will increase 35%... and this says it all.

Local TV station here recently did a news report on distracted driving (usually texting or talking on phone) while driving.
First offense is a $200. fine plus $90. court fees.

Then there are the folks texting or talking while riding a bicycle in traffic without helmets but the don't get fined as they are eco friendly.

I have seen bicycles texting going thru intersections on a red light!

There was a time when government only purpose was to serve... I really think it has done a 180 with the purpose being to not only grow but thrive.

I've been to city council meetings and it gets hard to listen to all the talk of how much fees can be raised vs the number of protests expected...

In 1978, a groundswell of California voters passed Prop 13 and Sacramento has never forgot...

How can anyone with a straight face explain how a $25 ticket for failing to report an address change become $2900...

Only explanation is because they can...

Penalties are a big money maker. Don't even THINK about missing Wednesday's tax filing deadline if you owe them money.
Make a credit card payment a day late or overdraw your checking account and see how much it costs you. Penalties, fees, and interest on any of the above can make it impossible to get caught up.

Seems every year I'm down to the wire... there is always a single K1 holding up the works...

Thing is this K1 is dependant on another K1 which is dependant on another K1... well you get the idea.

It's also like a yo-yo because income can vary greatly so quarterly payments can be quite steep in anticipation only to be refunded the next year if a sale didn't happen...

Seems this is the way government is going... fees topped with escalating penalties.

lots of toll lanes going in around here. story recently about someone who took one by mistake, now owes thousands in back fee's etc because of it. Legalized theft. Our govt has lost track of the reason they exist, it sure isn't to legally rob people blind.

The term you're looking for is "police state". We're at the mild end of one, the really severe ones make **** Germany look normal.

A week ago I had to stop and take a call. I pulled over at a safe spot first. Then it dawned on me it was in front a of a big group of mail boxes. There has been a lot of mail theft locally , and people watching out and posting all over Facebook community pages. I thought "Great, someone is going to think I am stealing mail!".

Getting to see more and more stopped cars any old place texting , like around blind corner, at traffic lights, gas stn,. Quite frustrating and still in many cases dangerous.

I'm not that old and have seen dramatic changes... call the police because your home or car was burgled and the response is to go online to file a report.

Your out somewhere and your car window gets popped and it's your fault... kind of car you drive, where you parked, time of day... etc.

Mail theft is common and so are break ins... every business around where I work has been hit and some like the 7/11 at gun point... the banks, post offices, gas stations employees are all behind bullet proof gas at a minimum... one bank puts people coming in inside a vestibule where you can't go forward or back unless a teller releases the door...

An 80 year old Grandmother going to the hospital to visit her 8 year old Granddaughter is turned away because she doesn't have a photo ID yet her son is with her with a Driver's License.

When I went to jury duty I thought I was in the wrong line... getting scanned and frisked and forget about going to a Federal Building... it worse.

The neighbors on my street pooled together $1200 on 24 hours to set up a security system of cameras and most now pay for private security patrol...

The sad thing is all of the above is the new "Normal"
