I had a Moultrie IR 55 along a deer trail well within my Posted property.
I even had one of those cable locks around the tree securing it. I checked it on Apr 10.... Came back to Va and ....gone. they left the cable around the tree.
Is there a better anti theft system?
My neighbor said that a Turkey hunter probably spotted it...and didnt want me to see his photo tresspassing. SOB!!!

One idea, buy a trail camera with separate receiver, so the cam captures the pictures but the SD card is at 250ft away; in this way maybe you can have a picture of the person who stolen. Here is one, but there are so many on market now.

Buddy had 2 stolen, so he put up a third one in the same spot with another one facing it. Got pictures of the neighbor. The guy offered to give the camera's back which he graciously took, then, called the cops and is prosecuting the guy:thumbsup:

Maybe you've just got really smart deer.

He needs to be prosecuted.

A guy I work with has a few at his hunting spot that transmit wireless and upload to an online account which also sends him a text message whenever a picture is taken. He had one stolen and had a picture of the guy walking up to it, a literal trail of pictures leading to the guys house and photos inside his house.
He gave all the info to the local police who questioned the guy and he denied it, then they showed him a picture of him looking at the camera in front of his 4 wheeler.

You need to hide it better, or risk getting it stolen... again.

I like the idea of the wireless transmitter to internet, but it sure sounds expensive.

I haven't had any experience with trail cams but are they available with a gps tracking chip? These things are available for around US$50 and I would think you could retro fit one in the camera. Then you just have to go pick it up from the thief! (with force)

Alternatively put a sticker on the camera warning that a gps tracker is fitted (even if there is not one) and hope they choose not to risk it?

I'd bait the guy. Put another one in the same area, then a third one camouflaged and hidden watching the first. Sooner or later they will come back and steal the replacement. Just make sure your camo job is a good one.

When did the country travel so far down the gutter? I can't believe the things that people are stealing. So sad, that our once great country is now just a nation of criminals and malcontents, with a few of us hard working suckers tagging along.

Good idea, but find a free/cheap broken/used one on kijiji as the bait, there's still a good chance you'll never catch them.

Couldn't you hide one inside an innocent looking birdhouse with strategically placed holes... not many people are going to peer inside a birdhouse. Of course you might get the occasional bird-brain..sorry, couldn't resist.

Of the Lawyers, By the Lawyers and For the Lawyers!
A guy shoots and kills 5 people in a bank, caught on camera.
Police catch him outside, take him to court and he is a suspect.

I'm just thinking outside the box here.....But what if you ..wrote on a 3X5 card " You are screwed...put the camera down a picture of you has been taken and transmitted..If you keep the camera you will be prosecuted...Then put it in a protective plastic cover and tack it to the tree ..then mount your camera over it...At least you might want to try this if you don't want to go to the expense of buying another camera...scare 'em maybe it will work.

Your security system is flawed.
Once a tresspasser sees your device, he has to assume his photo is on it. He has little choice but to steal the card or destroy /steal the camera depending on his knowledge of such things.
In order for this to work you have to get his identity without him knowing it. It's unlikely the camouflage will work, unless you are an expert at such things.
The fact that he took your camera makes me wonder if he knows that once you see his picture you will know his identity. Maybe a neighbor or a friend of a neighbor, relative?
The problem with the wireless cellular download is that the camera costs 4x what yours does and you have to have a wireless plan, that could be a lot of data should the device not be set up properly. If the sees it, he is still going to steal it or destroy it. know you have to hope you can find him and get it or compensation.
it may be that since this happened he's not going to risk the return trip, and find another place to trespass.

What about gates?

What about exploding dye packs like they use in banks?

Or rig an aerosol can to go off. Probably need a warning of some sort for the lawyers.

I'm curious as to how the thief separated the camera from the cable lock. On a Reconyx, he'd have to bust up the camera to leave the cable lock.
