Trailer inspections - GAAD!

I thought VA offered a "Permanent" trailer tag as an option? Does that still require inspection?

But yeah, like the guy up there ^^ said - register it in Maine and forget about it...

Yep, the annual inspection is required for trailers over 3000# gross weight, independent of what kind of tag you have.

Yes, they do, I've Permanent plates, inspected yearly. Maine requires inspection on trailers over 7,001 lbs., my GVWR is 12,000.

Driving to Maine would be a lot farther than driving to Woodbridge.

I sometimes let my VA trailer inspection lapse as I can go months with only towing around on my property. If I have to pickup a load and drive on the roads, I will get it inspected, otherwise it's a guarantee I'll get ticketed (local police eyeball my trailer any time I pass by -- they know exactly where to look for stickers, so I assume it must be a common infraction). The place near me schedules it like a car inspection and takes about 20-30 minutes. It's a formality, since I make sure all lights/brakes/backup work before I leave my driveway.

All four inspections I've had took about 3 to 4 minutes (Not including the 10 minutes one time when they were searching the shop for a tag). Brakes, lights, tires, they are SUPPOSED to pull your emergency break away pin and wait 15 minutes, but that wasn't done.

Hey Newbury, this afternoon I had my motor home inspected in Sterling, VA at Zukowski Fleet Service. I talked with the owner, Mike Zukowski, about your experience while he was doing the inspection. He does rigs of all kinds and sizes, right in the parking lot if necessary. Said if you still need yours done, bring it on over.

If you lived in Maine your trailer would have to be inspected. I think it's every two years but I'm not certain.

According to the Maine inspection law, trailers under 7000 lbs do not require inspection if they are not commercial. If they are over 7000 or commercial they can be inspected in any state where they are used. I'll try to find a link.

I am surprised we dont have inspections, for vehicles or trailers.

Thankfully we don't have those here in Ca. What a nightmare.

^^^ We do have smog inspections for most motor vehicles.

Plus when a Dealer sells a car retail there is the added requirement of a brake inspection prior to sale.

Cars that are deemed totaled also must undergo inspection. My brother's Mustang was stolen and recovered minus the interior and wheels and was totaled... before he could get plates it had to have several inspections even though it was the same car with only a new interior and wheels.

Years ago I attended a talk given by the head of the DMV and the subject of annual inspection came up. The speaker stated it was more of a necessity in areas with winter road salt playing havoc on metal, brake components, and electrical systems...

my only question is how can i get it tagged without inpsection? is it because i don't live in ME?
