I rented a 5 ton from Superior in Southington a few years ago, sounds like the same one. We went to Maine to bring back an Allis Chalmers 200. Found out that it had suitcase weights, wheel weights and loaded tires, which put the weight somewhere (I think) around 12-13000 pounds. Trailer handled it no problem.
So you put a 12,500# tractor on a trailer that has a GVWR of 10,000# and probably weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,500# empty. That means you had a payload available of 7,500# and you were somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000# overweight. Glad I am not in the rental business.
