Just bought a 18' 14gvw equipment trailer. There is no mfg tag on it. (no title) I would say it is built too professionally to be a home built. Built better than some of the top 4 mfg that I have looked at. The only # I can find is J.N.072710-- stamped on the tongue. The fellow owned it 5 years, said he bought it off of a farmer. I have the license tag # that was on it. If a picture would help, I'll try and get one in a couple days.

I have a home built trailer with just letters and numbers stamped into the tongue for a homemade trailer registration. I'm thinking it might be homemade. Mine looks very professional and is why I was confident in buying it.

You can call the police dept and with proper proof that you own it you can get a serial number assigned to it.

That J.N. number very well could be the assigned title number. Mine starts with a...WV. bet you'll guess what state it was built in. I could certainly be wrong though in his case.

Many years ago my brother purchased a small fishing boat for me in Oregon where he lived.

I met him halfway driving time, paid him, then took the boat home to Utah, and it did not need a trailer plate at that time due to it's small size.

Upon retiring, I moved to Montana and the boat trailer needed a trailer plate, and being it was home a made trailer it was lacking a serial number.

DMV required me to get a statement from my brother saying the trailer was home made, then DMV assigned the trailer a serial number.

I purchased a metal stamp letter/number die set and stamped the serial number in the tongue of the trailer.

Then I had to get a LEO to view the serial number on the trailer and sign off the DMV form to get the Montana trailer plate.

The hardest part was stamping the serial number, trying to make it look sort of good...

The trailer serial number DMV assigned was SNTR00000MT (except it was not 5 zero's).

I built a small trailer for dirt bikes. When I registered it the state gave me a sticker with a VIN. It kind of left me wondering as what would stop someone from stealing a trailer and then registering it as homemade? The state required the sticker to be placed on the front of the trailer on the driver's side (left), not on the tongue. Since there was no title there was nothing saying who made it. Cars have hidden VINs on them but I doubt a trailer would. As far as I know VINs should be 17 digits.

You can call the police dept and with proper proof that you own it you can get a serial number assigned to it.

And of course when they inspect it to do the VIN reassignment they might even turn up a confidential VIN and find out if it’s stolen. :alert:
