I use a 14' aluminum trailer. 5k capacity for my BX25. It has brakes.

Review the tow abilities of your truck or tow vehicle. I think getting any trailer that is smaller than tandem 18 or 20 ft will seem like a mistake in a few short years. This size will also tow well and back much easier.
But reguardless of what you get, look at the local market - trailers seem harder to find during the last 2 years. I highly recommend buying from a company who uses only certified welders. Become familiar with accessories that can be used with a triler - set back Jack, ramp storage, or tilt bed. spare tire mount, and brakes that are required in your states. Best Wishes.

This may not apply to trucks, but it is something to consider. I was going to add a hitch to my SUV. Internet searches came up with 2,000lbs. Only one place mentioned that the 2,000lb rating was only if the trailer had brakes. Without brakes the limit was 1,500lbs. That was confirmed when I actually looked at the owners manual.

So, review your tow capabilities, but make sure you use the right source and look for footnotes.

In many case the amount of weight towed isn't the problem, it is the stopping.

Any trailer that the OP is looking at should have brakes. I definitely wouldn't shop for a trailer to haul a tractor that doesn't have any.

I've never seen a rating given for my truck to tow an amount without brakes, but I do think there is a law that trailers over 3,000 (or something thereabouts) must have brakes. That should suffice.

One or two states I believe are 1,500lbs to have brakes.

I actually installed brakes on my small 2,000lb trailer. It stops so nice.

I have a BX, and bought a 20' trailer to haul it with 2 3500 lbs axles. The trailer is a good match for my half ton truck, and will max out my truck's capabilities.

I'm in the same boat as mewmaxowner.... after going through several trailers I finally bought a 20' 10K Kaufman for my BX. Tow vehicle is a 1/2 ton GMC rated for just under 10K.

The additional deck space has come in handy... I mounted a toolbox at the front of the trailer that holds ratchet straps, binders and chains. With FEL and brushog the tractor pretty much takes up all of the deck space... with just enough room to load balance. That 20' trailer also comes in handy a couple times a year doing double duty as car hauler to get family vehicles to the mechanic.

Do I lose some weight capacity with a heavier trailer? Without a doubt, and I'm not necessarily advocating everyone overbuy on trailer weight ratings. Everyone's needs and preferences are different. However, and this is a huge thing for me, that 10K Kaufman pulls like a dream compared to the lighter and shorter trailers that I previously owned.

...

Nothing against a 20' trailer, if I could fit it in my available space. My 16 can handle my BX24 w/FEL and Hog - with the tail wheel just hanging over the end. Weight is perfectly balanced.

Put a trapeziod tool box on the triangle tongue with enough room for all my tractor-related clobber, and fabricated a spare tire holder that sits between that and the trailer deck.

Just some alternatives for those of us who can only aspire to a bigger rig ;)
