Trailer/Truck Setup

I have a 2010 ram 1500 4wd 5.7hemi, It pulls just fine with a load as matter of fact this past weekend I hauled my tractor on my 24' gooseneck approx. 15k total 60 miles round trip, hauled 2 loads of hay 14k pounds same distance. plenty of power, trailer brakes help stop it. I never got over 50mph and know how to balance the load so the truck is not squatted. fuel mileage is the only negative. It drops to 12mpg doing this kind of hauling

50 mph is the key. Run 65 and you would get 7.

And where are you pulling the 7 mpg number from ?..............I have had two 1500 4 x4 hemis and pulled similar loads and saw the mileage he stated when doing 65 mph

I had a Hemi. 3.92 gears and 11 mpg around town and 7 towing was all it could muster. You must only drive down hill or your math is fuzzy.

Read any truck forum and my numbers will be validated.

By the way my Eco Boost will 26 mpg unloaded at 50 mph but who drives at 50 mph? It's more around 21 running 73 ish and 9 to 13 towing depending on load. My 61,000 mile average is just a tad over 18.

Please be forthcoming with all the facts your Hemi was a 2003. We have a 2003 ram 2500 as well and have never seen it get that low. Now the 2011 F450 V10 we have has never returned more than 7.5 mpg. I could leave out the fact that the F450 is a box truck but I won't.

Ok. It was a 2003, crew cab, short bed, 4x4 with a POS automatic transmission that got replaced twice in 68,000 miles. It was blue with grey interior if that matters. Can't miss it, usually it was riding around on a Ford Roll Back. Got great mileage then! PS, it had rust at the bottoms of the doors and tailgate. That should make it Eisner to identify....

Y'all are getting off topic - can the guy SAFELY haul what he needs to where he needs to is the problem. He's not talking about doing it often, it's a one time haul. Mileage per gallon may not matter.

This is the input the OP needs. But MSFarms is in Florida (maximum elevation 345 FEET).

Can he haul it through the Appalachians? I think there are a couple of places on I81 he might be in LOW gear. I haul that route routinely w/ my dually and a 6 to 10K load w/ trailer. But for a Vermonter doing it one time I think he could make it. And if he cut's across the flatlands (Ohio etc. vs I81) it will be easier.

Plan on using twice as much gas to get home...

The answer is yes he can safely haul it. Provided his numbers are correct, he is within the rated limits. And those ratings I am sure get a level of safety built in.

Only thing I would check is see what the trucks hitch is rated for. Make sure it matches the load.

Will it safely tow it yes. I pull 8,000 lbs behind 2004 1500 suburban. Bobcat on trailer. Good electric brake control, you want the kind that has the inertia braking. Brakes on both axles. Replaced stock hitch, wouldn't trust older stock frame hitch mount. Has weight distributing hitch and 3/8 safety chains with the correct load rated clevis. 3/8 load chains all at the correct load rating. It is safe, but the truck is not going to like it! What Zing stated above is correct. Don't remember if your year truck has issues or you have had issues with your exhaust manifold bolts, but.... there going to get a work out along with the rest of the truck. If it was me I would see if I could get it to fit in a u haul or Ryder truck. The pulls I make are local and if the engine blows up its no big deal to me and I have the shop and equipment to replace it.

It will do it but it will push you around.

I had my weight distributing hitch cranked down pretty good and told myself I wouldn't do this again. Borrowed my BIL's 3/4 ton the next time I hauled it and it was a dream. Now I own a 3/4 ton.
