I've got bolt cutters. No torch. I bought a bunch of ring connectors so I might try my DIY vice crimp tool or my sorry soldering iron.

The more time I spend on TBN the more I realize I don't have nearly enough tools.....and I have a lot of tools....
No way a household soldering iron will touch this job. The wire and crimp size will never get hot enough to Draw the solder in.

Agreed. And this iron isn't even a decent household one.

you can also cut the cable with a 4.5 '' angle grinder with a cut off wheel attached. I'm with the torch gang. You can get a propane torch kit cheap.

Put the metal part of the connector in a vise. melt the solder (same solder used to solder copper water pipes together) into the connector. with the solder in a good hot melted state (liquid like water) , insert the wire into the connector and hold it there until it cools

I should probably just get a good soldering gun. Sears has a dual heat 400/150 watt that gets good reviews for $50. If not, I'll go with a little propane unit.

I have that one. It's great but it would not do this job to satisfaction. I would still use my torch.

yes, I really don't believe a soldering gun is going to work on this job. you are going to have to get the fitting hotter than a solder gun can keep it.. Torch kit is best for this. Just like soldering copper pipe But easier

I use my Torch weekly. Use it to solder, light fireplace, light burn piles, melt things, thaw things, burn rope ends, ect, ect, ect.

You won't regret getting one. Spend $30 and get a auto light one that can also run Mapp Gas and you can weld with it.

weld with it ? What can you weld with map gas ? It won't get hot enough to melt silver solder. You can't gas weld with it..How /what metals are you going to weld with it ?

We have used it with aluminum boat rails and brazing rods.

Either way, a torch is a versatile tool.
