Anyone have any expereince using a small six cylinder automatic pickup to tow a 16 foot trailer and a tractor about the size of a 2310? I don;t wish to burn up my only transportation.

Thanks,

I used a six cylinder dodge Dakota to trailer a similar Kubota in the past. Pulling was no problem at all, but stopping was a white knucle affair on more than one occassion. This truck also had tool boxes and was pretty much maxed out weight-wise.

Full-size ford six-cylinder had no problem at all.

It all depends Dennis. How often? If it's only occasionally for short distances, no problem at all. If you make a regular thing out of it you'll wear out that truck real quick. It's just not designed for towing. Even for short trips, make sure you've got good/functional trailer brakes. Slow starts are one thing, slow stops are a real danger /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I use a Jeep GC to tow a 16 ft with my B2710 w/FEL and 5ft. bush hog with no problems. The Jeep has a 4L. 6 cyl. in it, and is rated to tow 5000 lbs. Don't go real far and only do it about once a month. and I do have brakes on the trailer.

I have a 2310, and my ex neighbor wanted his garden tilled. He pulled my tractor and trailer with a 2001 Dodge Dakota with the 3.9 V6 engine. I rode with him and he didn't seem to have any difficulty driving nor was the truck straining. He said it was like pulling a loaded U-Haul trailer. Trip was 40 miles one way on interstate and two lane roads including several steep hills. I use a '79 Ford F250 with a 300 inline six. I have no problem. It must be stated that we both drive carefully and have expierence pulling trailers, we are both exmilitary members and have pulled trailers during PCS moves.

I used to trailer my 1702d with my six cylinder Jeep Cherokee. It didn't feel as good as when I used my Dakota R/T with the 5.9 and supercharger but it did ok :)

I'll give you my 6-cyl experience with towing, and let you decide.

I used to have a 99 ford ranger, with the -small- 6 cyl.. 3.0

I pulled a small angle-iron frame w/ 2x6 wood bottom, single axle, no breaks. I had my ym1700 on it. Due to the single axle thing, it made the tounge light if I went fast over rr tracks, etc, otherwise, if I was easy w/ the brakes and accelerator, it was adequate.
I also pulled a dual axle horse trailer w/ 1 axle of electric brakes. That worked much better, as the brakes on the trailer greatly inproved stopping.... but with 2 horses ( 1800-2400 lbs ) and the trailer ( ~ 1100lbs ) max speed uphill was 45mph! My truck had the factory towing package, and a drawtite class III hitch, and aftermarket e-brake controller.

Needless to say, first good deal on a real truck i saw, I traded.

Good thing too, as I now have a NH 1920 tractor and it weighs in at about 3300# by itself...

Make sure your automatic is in drive (D) and not overdrive (DD). I have a 3/4 ton GMC with a 350 V8 that is set up to haul and my wife burned out the transmission hauling an empty three horse trailer about six hundred miles. When the transmission is in overdrive it doesn't much power and it's harder on the motor if you are pulling anything.

I had a 86 F150 300 inline six, with a stump pulling granny gear tranny. This thing would pull like no other, pulled my 19' boat for years & a 16' tandum axel trailer with a TM187 on it no problem, took a bit to reach top end but you want to climb a tree this is the combo....ummm...can you tell I miss this pickum-up truck was a sad day to see it leave my yard for the last time
