I'll give you my 6-cyl experience with towing, and let you decide.
I used to have a 99 ford ranger, with the -small- 6 cyl.. 3.0
I pulled a small angle-iron frame w/ 2x6 wood bottom, single axle, no breaks. I had my ym1700 on it. Due to the single axle thing, it made the tounge light if I went fast over rr tracks, etc, otherwise, if I was easy w/ the brakes and accelerator, it was adequate.
I also pulled a dual axle horse trailer w/ 1 axle of electric brakes. That worked much better, as the brakes on the trailer greatly inproved stopping.... but with 2 horses ( 1800-2400 lbs ) and the trailer ( ~ 1100lbs ) max speed uphill was 45mph! My truck had the factory towing package, and a drawtite class III hitch, and aftermarket e-brake controller.
Needless to say, first good deal on a real truck i saw, I traded.
Good thing too, as I now have a NH 1920 tractor and it weighs in at about 3300# by itself...
