Here i am! Ive been reading and learning. My biggest concern is its abitity to safely tow up to 8000 lbs which is about what i read it is capable of. I met a broker that buys and sells vehicles to a municipality. I can aquire a diesel suburban from him but its pretty much gonna be sight unseen. So i cant inspect the vehicle. He has assured me that there is rarely anything wrong with them. Just lots of miles and sometimes dirty viynl interiors.Generally 100,000 to 125,000.They are just upgrading vehicles with surplus budget. I did see the one he was driving and it looked perfect for my needs. Wasnt greatest looking paint after decals were removed though. Thanks.

Sight unseen? Good luck of the draw.

Have patience. You'll run across a good towing machine, that can be seen and inspected before purchase.

If I were looking at 8K lbs, I'd want a 2500 series.

Glad you came back. :D

crbr: I can actually see the whole engine. How did that happen? Aren't all modern vehicles supposed to have engines covered under layers of pretty plastic, and be tucked neatly far under the cowl? ;) It looks like you could actually work on that engine yourself. (says I, harumphing, as the owner of a Ford 5.4.....) :)

Honestly, that is an engine that a friend of mine is working on. He's got it torn down to replace a few hoses and gaskets, etc. He enjoys working on his engines to the point of cleanliness and preventative maintenance.

what the heck happened to that truck in the pic? everything is on the wrong side. All the years ive spent under the hood of a 6.5 thats the first i have seen set up that way. intake is different, brake booster on the wrong side, a/c acumulator on the wrong side, and if thats an S motor tell him to hollow out the cat while he has it apart and have the intake steam cleaned.

Maybe Its built for south of the Equator?
They do every thing backwards down there.

I thought maybe it was reversed in photoshop, but the "caution - fan" is right reading. Must be an Aussie vehicle?

if it has a turbo it would have to be engine mounted not manifold mounted, i have only seen engine mounted turbo's on postal P chasis, also the recovery bottle for the coolant is odd. the intake tube is what really stands out to me though.

I read that was a picture of an Australian truck (left hand drive postion). It is the Van and or Hummer engine. The heads on those are different they have different intake V angle and the turbo is center mount. Short block is the same.

Here is a for instance for you I have a 20 ft flat gooseneck with 5ft dovetail. Its made by Superior in GA. Loaded with a '72 Ford 3000 and 5ft rotary cutter weights are as follows

Loaded
Steer axle 3800 lb
Drive axle 4580 lb
Trailer axle 7540 lb
Gross Weight 15920 lb

I think the truck weights about 6200 lbs. So thats 9720 lbs of tow weight. My 6.5 will pull it fine locally on secondary roads but I don't try it on the highway because speed would yo yo on rolling hills too bad. Mountains would be real slow. Its a great daily driver truck and feels peppy unloaded but with some real weight its pretty dogged and thats with an after market exhaust.
Granted its a gooseneck but a heavy enough tag along will be fairly heavy too might shave off 1500-2000 lbs maybe.
With some more mods ($$$ intercooler and reprogram) I have read of others towing 10,000 lbs on the interstate and not being a rolling road block.

I have pulled the tractor with a tag a long car hauler trailer and it was not near as stable and I would not go faster than 45 MPH with it.
If you want something to pull anything bigger than a ~ 40 hp tractor get a different tow vehicle and step up to gooseneck or much bigger tow vehicle if tag a long trailer IMHO.

Here is a pic of a Truck/SUV 6.5 engine. Its all realative. Its tight but lots of avg joes can work on them (I've changed injectors and glowplugs) maybe easier than the Fords but its not roomy by any means.
