Would love to see pictures when you get a chance. I hope to add some more paths on our property next year when the snow melts.

Here is a pix of a trial I cut in pre-tractor...I used a chain saw and a machete.

I am going to try the brush hog method next time...I have almost all big woods so it's
fairly open except for some small stuff here and there.

TC29, your woods looks similar to what I'm trying to cut a trail through. How much trail did you cut and how long did it take with a chainsaw and machete? I have started a section, but it's looking like it could be quite a project. I'm going around 60-70 acres.

I have about a mile of trails so far. I flagged the trials path by walking down the top of my ridges marking with orange tape while staying away from the big stuff. I tried to stay on the top (more level) but the ridge really dictated where I went, I tried to stay on a fairly straight line.

I cut all the little stuff iin the trail down to ground level with the saw and then trimmed the trees on either side with my machete to allow my four wheeler and me a clear ride. It took me 1 day to do the first trail, about 1/4 mile. I didn't take anything down bigger than 3". Make sure to have more than one chainsaw chain, if you hit dirt (you will) it will dull the chain in a heartbeat.

I would chainsaw for a while and then rest by dragging off the cut stuff. I piled it up near the property line and have 3 nice brush piles. Honestly, it was more fun than work.

Attached is a pix from last spring...shows more of the same...I am lucky, my woods are pretty open with lots of large pines, oaks, walnuts, hickories, etc.
In this case I reclaimed an old logging road.

I have since gone back and grubbed out a few small stumps that were in my tires path...the rest are slowly getting loser and should disappear over time.

Sorry for the long winded answer. Make sure you have lots of water...and have fun!

PS...Toro...Thanks for the "atta boy"!

My woods are pretty much like TC-29's except where they were field 20 years ago - those are heavy brush and privit.

Thanks for all the responses - good info.

If you have a right tight area I use these bank blades. Thin very sharp hardened 2-sided blade. they will slice through a 2" softwood in one swat. I have 2 sizes, get the bigger one, the extra weight helps. Also work real easy stripping limbs of trees for shooting lanes without taking out the tree. One wack and you drop all the limbs on one side.

Mine is the one on the far right.

Bmac beat me to the punch on referencing his thread.

Rvaitor, don't think you have to spend 80k, I think bmac spent $150/hr, and someone else rented that setup for $500/day. Seems like well worth the price if you can spend the money and have lots to do(if its available in your area).

Still brushhogging works, and might be more fun than watching, although it sounds like bmac had plenty of fun watching. Hrmm, this really is tractor ****. Tractor project related voyeurism.

Pretty slick but at $80K I don't think I can join the club.

I couldn't join that club either. As Tororider said, I hired a guy to do it. He had the 1/2 mile trail cleared in 4 hours @ $150/hr. Believe me, it was money well spent. No trees to haul off, nothing to burn. Everything was mulched up.

Good luck with your project. Keep us posted on your progress.

My latest, and best method is to take out the trees with my backhoe, and then drag them to the burn pile with a chain attached to the backhoe. This is a real clean way to do it.
Eddie

Hey Eddie,

Is the county up there in Tyler real restrictive about burning brush piles? Down in Goliad County as well as Refugio, the county folks usually have a fit when someone tries to burn something because conditions are usually pretty dry. How did you set your burn area up?

Thanks,

CTW
