I use the Kubota Super UDT. Yea, it's expensive but but it's cheap compared to a trans/hydro rebuild.
On the subject of using 10w40 motor oil for hydraulic fluid, I drive the transport bus for the prison I work at and it uses 10w40 oil for the power steering system!?

I use Amsoil Synthetic Hyd/trans fluid. I also filter it down to 1 micron with an add-on independant (of hydraulic system) filter. It is entirely likely that a hydraulic system specifies 10w30 motor oil when using wheel motors. My Bobcat walkbehind mower uses motor oil for the hyraulics also.

The Owner's Manual and the sticker on the hydraulic oil tank both say: "10W40 Motor Oil ONLY."!!

When I questioned the Power Trac factory rep about it, he said: "We use Motor Oil because it's cheap, available, and works just fine."!!

I don't care about cost or availability. I just want top performance, and a long trouble free life, from my equipment!!!! Motor oil may work "just fine", but is it "THE BEST" oil for my hydraulics???!!

Most people say: "Do whatever the manufacturer says!"!
But, this tractor is assembled by Power Trac using off-the-shelf hydraulic components. I may mix a great milkshake, but does that mean I know what's best for the cow!??!

I went through the same agonizing investigation with my walkbehind Bobcat mower (as previously posted). I am very particular about maintenance and fluid selection as you apparently are also, and I still run the recommended 10w30 motor oil in the hydraulic sump for the following reasons :
1) MFG specification
2) The professional landscapers over at lawnsite.com use it
3) Logically speaking, the hydraulic motors on my Bobcat get the fluid HOT after a long day and it may well be that the motor oil is better suited in a high temperature hydraulic application.

All that being said (opinions only) the number one killer of hydraulic systems / components is contamination. Religous maintenance will ensure a long life of your machine. Clearly you are big on maintenance or you wouldn't be here!

TSC, what the heck is a TSC. Had to do a quick search. My closest TSC is in Billings, Montana. For those not familiar with the West, thats a couple of states over. Difference is, the states are much bigger so the driving time really increases. I'll just have to stick to lowly Kubota UDT from my lowly high priced JD/Kubota dealer /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
