I bought a used John Deere 110 at a lowes, and it won't move. It fires up and the pto/mower works, but it wont move in forward or reverse. It's like the transmission won't engage the drive train. I checked out the manual, and it indicates that a bypass valve switch on the back can be the source of the problem - I guess that the bypass valve, when opened, allows the tractor to be pushed by hand. However on the back of the tractor there is no bypass valve lever - just a hole where (I suspect) the thing used to be. I have a feeling that the lowes repair guy removed the lever when he was repairing the brakes, or something like that - that's about all I can think of. Or maybe the delivery guys did something when they rolled it off the truck.
So my question is, has anybody had an issue like this before, and does anyone have any recommendations about how to fix it? I figure if I pull the back off the mower I might be able to toggle the lever housing in some way, to close off the valve.
No huge rush on this because its finally raining in CA and I won't be mowing any time soon. Thanks very much.

If the free-wheeling lever doesn't stick out the back panel, then it is likely missing.

Go to jdparts.com and see where that lever goes to the transmission.

The pic shows the rod, and where it connects (held with only a push nut) and may just have slipped off.
Item 26 is the by-pass lever operated by the item 1 rod (part no. GX21493).
Removing the fender deck will likely let you put it back.

Has the machine not moved forward or reverse since you picked it up at Lowes?

I assume this is the L110, not the old 110.

Need a little more info --- this is a D140??? If not what is the model of the tractor. When/how did this start?? What have you checked?? Can you check hydro fluid level on your model?? Have you checked it?? Have you checked drive belt??
