Oil & Fuel Transmission Oil type

For the minimum cost in the whole scheme of things I would change it. I got to wonder what kind of Chinese bulk fluid gets put it in there to get it out the door. In the name of profit I'm betting it's the cheapest oil they can get knowing it will be changed at 50 hours.

My point EXACTLY! I just had my dealer's mechanics change both HST filters and I took a close look at the fluid that came out of the filters and it was nearly perfectly clean- like new at 93 hours, no prior service of any kind on the tranny.
I also had them change the fuel filter; I had already done the 50 hr svc. on the oil and filter. That I used the Amsoil diesel oil for; which I also used with my earlier DK-35SE /HST.
The mechanics said they NEVER change the tranny oil at 50 hr service on HST's, and usually do it around 200-250 hours. SOMETIMES they do change the trans fluid on Shuttle Shifters due to those who don't come to a complete stop between forward and reverse sometimes causing premature fluid contamination. They did say that unless something fell in the fill hole with the cap/plug removed the chances of contaminating an HST were virtually unheard of- though occasionally some condensation can build up in the flexible hydraulic lines going to equipment like a backhoe through normal operation of the tractor and its equipment.

As to cars- my Toyota Forerunner does NOT have a transmission dipstick, and there is, ( I believe) no change interval- so its LIFEtime tranny fluid.
Some cars now don't even have OIL dipsticks!! The computer tells you when to drive to your dealer for the change of oil and filter.

So it is my personal opinion that HST tranny fluid change does NOT need to be done at 50 hours UNLESS there is visible contamination- milky colored fluid, or evidence of high levels of metal on the plug; which as stated above, and backed by my dealer's mechanics, is highly unlikely on an HST at 50 hours.

Well you know the old saying : 100 hours is equal to 3000 miles...on an
engine. Do you change your car oil ever 1500 miles.?? I know a guy who has
a Kubota and he told me he had never changed the Trannie and Hydraulic oil in it yet. He changes filters on them and that is all. Has never had a problem yet .
Personnaly I think Oil is cheaper then Bearings. So I guess I will have to change it just for peace of mind.
What does the Manufactor say if you take it in because you have a problem.? Sorry no Warrantry ?? If I know them they look for any excuse to get out of doing something that's on them.. Just ask GM.
Anyway, since everyone is giving there opinion I thought I might as well wade into it as well.

The 100hr=3000miles analogy might be reasonable for changing motor oil but we are focused on transmission fluid. Does anyone change their new car or truck transmission fluid at 1500 miles/50hrs and then again every 6000 miles?

I have never heard any one ever doing that . Have you ?
Are we saying there is no filings in a car or truck Transmission but there is in a tractor ? Hmmmm ! You might have something there.

The combination of a magnetic plug and the filtration system seems to me to be pretty good protection against metal filings.

I really don't have any technical knowledge regarding differences between tractor HST and automotive auto transmissions but clearly no car manufacturer suggests changing ATF until at least 30,000 miles and many newer cars are set up at the factory with "lifetime" ATF that literally never is supposed to be changed. Even when owners insist on changing the ATF that seems only to be done after tens of thousands of miles (??300-400 hours on a tractor equivalent). The car tranny's don't have big fancy and expensive HST filters either.

Again, I don't have any specific information on this issue I just don't understand why the tractor HST recommendations are so different from automotive maintenance. Just seems a big disconnect.

Some great points here , but I will change mine at 50 hours mainly for peace of mind and any warranty issues at a later date.

Since someone mentioned the use of a magnetic plug, I thought I would share that Kubota uses a replaceable magnet in the hydraulic filters to catch metal particles. The magnet is available separately and has the following approximate dimensions.

OD: 2.964
ID: 2.340
Thickness: 0.175
(Allow +/- 0.005 for possible error in measurement)

The magnet sits on top of the filter where the holes are and mounting thread is located. It cost approximately $10.

I am just throwing this out there in the event someone has a need for it.

Ok Guys
I have decided to change the oil at 50 hrs. What have I to loose a couple of hundred bucks? As some of you have stated better safe that sorry. I,m going with Mobil hydraul extra. I called there tech line and they explained to me that it was a great all round oil for my weather .
Thanks for all your coments and and come on spring.

I agree with wallace, lots of stuff floating around in the fluid, first 50hrs is break in remember;) I always follow what the manual says regarding maintenance, the people who recommend the hour/service intervals must've had some researche done to determine this. That' why they probably earns more than me:laughing: I use shell donax TDL as hydraulic fluid in my DK45SE HST and my CK30.

I understand the concern about "break in" period however this begs the question of 1) what are those expensive filters doing if not removing the "stuff floating around" and 2) what is so different about a tractor HST compared with an automobile auto transmission with regard to the need for a "break in" transmission fluid change?
