Im looking for information and opinions with regards to running a divorced transmission. Basically engine, clutch then drive line to transmission then rear end. I thought i read something about it along time ago but cant find any information on it. I know it must not be common in autos. But i know from tractors it is possible and at least was done a while ago. And anyone who runs small blocks in old tractors does it. We have pretty much only had old massey harris' so that is what im basing it on dont recall how are international M's were setup its. So can it be done and if so what exactly is needed?
Some basic info. the engine will probably be a big block, a manual clutch unless something else is needed for this setup? Then ran through a driveline to the transmission. Can i run a standard drive line from engine tail shaft to the tranny and have an input shaft on the driveline? The the transmission, I am thinking a SM465 (pretty strong chevy 4 speed) then a high-low box, I havent decided on a transfer case or not, then connect to the diff setup via a very short prop shaft. One reason for doing this is that the vehicle will be aprox 20 feet long and this would make setting up shifting and and speed controls easier.
But yeah the vehicle itd be going in would be from an older thread of mine some of us had discussed. Seeing how it was on a different topic and that people would probably miss this question i made a new one. No biggie i figure as when i get it all made up ill just have a construction thread where i link all these in.

I think the problem is supporting the input shaft on the transmission, (at one time I did see some one making a kit to put a bearing and suppor on the input shaft) but I do not know now where to get one and for what transmission they fit)

If I'm not mistaken what you are describing is how the new Corvettes are set up except they use a transaxle.
I have seen boats that use a jack shaft so that the engine is mounted midship. Mercruiser manuals show how to align the engine with the sterndrive using a tape measure.
I think you are going to a lot of trouble for little gain. Even Volkswagen Bugs used a single shift rod to go from the front to the transaxle to have 4 speeds and reverse. Some clever engineering and you should be able to do the same.

pillow block could be used for a bearing support. similar for long driveshafts..

OK, kind of hard to run a divorced tranny? Are we talking divorced T-case?

No divorced tranny. Im wondering if that pillow block would indeed work. I know on the tractors the shaft is like 2 foot at most thats off the top my head. As long as its supported on both ends and along the way i think that may work.

Another thing that this setup allows is alot easier maintenance because because there wont be much room when im done.

You will be transfering the reaction torque path out of the engine, into the frame, then back into the transmission?
If so, make sure your frame can take the added wind-up or reinforce it so it can.
Soundguy's idea of using a pillow block to locate the shafting sounds good.

This idea gets complicated in a hurry. First youu would have to get some type of bearing to go in the back of the belhousing to support the out put shaft that goes through the clutch. This keeps the clutch disc centered. Then you would have to have some type of suppoort for the input shaft of the trans. The pilot bearing on the crank normaly does this. Then you would need some type of slip joint in the shaft that conects the engine ti the trans because you will have some flex in the frame.

if there are any irrigation companies they may have a source for a kit for standard bell housing to support the clutch and shaft out of the engine,

on one of the 4x4 I read a post about some one wanting a list of trucks that had been built with a divorced transmission, I did not see any listings tho,

but that would be the easer if one could find some thing all ready pre made,

not really aware of any but some light duty farm equipment could have been done that way, (old self propelled sprayers as a possibility) or construction equipment, possibly some fork lifts,

look at the old tractors using a torque tube and long drive shaft.

Check out Cub Lo Boys. 154/184. They have exactly what you're describing.
An OPEN DRIVESHAFT with supporting bearings, NOT A TORQUE TUBE, attaches to back of flywheel and runs back to the clutch that's mounted in front of the transmission/rear axle case.
Here's a link to photo's of one disassembled, but it's hard to understand without actually seeing one and I can't find a schematic of it.

i was refering to using a long shaft and a torque tube.. not specifically an open unshielded driveline.

My dad had a '63 Tempest ... from Wikipedia:
The 1961-1963 Pontiac Tempest incorporated an unusual curved 鍍orque-tube with a 4-inch drop (about 10 centimeters) that housed a 3/4 inch (2 cm) solid steel driveshaft (nicknamed the "rope shaft") without universal joints on each end. The main purpose was to make the floor lower, thus increasing the car's interior room.
He loved that car.

farmalls and some allises and i think cases may use a similar long driveshaft to t he tranny setup..
