Transplanted Tree

And I thought I was ambitious for wanting to dig up and move 7 small ornamental trees along our (former) property line sfter the purchase of the adjoining property.

Great job on the tree! You have inspired me to not only move the ornamental trees but to also give more consideration to moving some medium-sized Dogwood trees that were to be cut down.

I'm impressed. Certainly was quite a success. I don't know about your area but where I live a few times a year the wind blows so strong that trees that big can be bent over half way to the ground I've seen root balls pulled right out of the ground especially a tree that has been regularily watered which discouraged the tree from sending out long anchor/grazing roots. Obviously you will have to water this tree well so I would tether it very very very well to keep it from popping out. I don't know about your area but where I live a tree that big adds well over a thousand dollars to the value of the property so it's worth the effort. Good luck.

I moved a small dogwood at our last place. Dogwoods are very delicate and will be stunted for a couple of years after moving them, but it can be done.

It has been almost a year since I transplanted my maple tree and I wanted to give an update. It has made it! This year as I posted back in April it came alive with green leaves. It's leaves were smaller than normal and I am guessing that was from the shock of being moved and it started losing it's leaves ahead of the other maples around here, but it did make it. I have kept it watered during the dry spells of the summer. One problem I did have was some kind of wood bore. I lost about three 1" diameter limbs because of them. The limb would all of the sudden fall. I walk out in the yard and there is a limb with green leaves with a clean break. Took one to an arborist and he showed me the tiny hole in the limb where the bore was at. It ate the wood and left the bark/skin of the limb. Finally the weight of the limb was too much for the bark to support and it would fall.

Thanks for the update. I was going to try the same thing, but I had not planned it through. Now I see how to (try) to do it.

that's quite the move:cool: hope you get the borer under control, it'd be a shame to loose such a nice tree:(

After the success of the maple I moved another tree today. Last year I had scoped out an oak tree to move, but after the time and effort to move the maple, I was completely exhausted. Well today I had the backhoe on my tractor for one task and when I attach the backhoe I try to knock out as many things as I can. The oak is about 12 feet tall and took maybe 20 minutes to dig up, move and plant. We will see how it turns out.

Dangit - now another project to add to the list. I have 3+ acres, about 1 cleared. Lost the big oak (50') in the front yard 3 years after the house was built and want something big there quick. Thought about the nursery, but don't like the 50% chance on big $$$. As I clear space in the woods for my toy barn, I have often thought about the transplant idea. Figured it would be a disappointment, but now you go and give me hope -argh......:D

But seriously - amazing thread - very impressed Brent. Please keep us updated.

Have been told if you want a dogwood to make it, be sure you plant it in the same North South direction it was growing. Here, only the white ones can take our heat and they like shade then. Have seen older establish trees make it when the shade is cut from around them but not very often if they are transplanted from shade to sunshine.

Did the arborist suggest an insecticide for the borer problem?
Mine suggested Merit, which I get in quart concentrates from Bayer at Home Depot for $25 or so. I've saved a couple of trees with it.
