Just drive it home, don't over think it.

Have you checked with your local DMV regarding farm vehicles? That's the first place I'd check.

A friend of mine and I keep considering purchasing a bucket truck together. He needs it for farm use and I need it twice a year for Christmas lights. The problem is neither of us wants to purchase insurance or plates for driving it 20 miles twice a year!

a neighbor here or actually two of them, had a farm truck used for wheat harvest, usually less than 30 days, each year they would sell it to the other one and go down and get a temporary tag and use for harvest, next year they would sell back, and do the same, the insurance was covered as it was a new purchased and covered for 30 days,

I have even heard of being done by some one with a business name as well, and sell it back and forth to the business and then the business would sell it back to the person, on seldom used trucks.
(Colorado as a back payment on licenses that are aloud to laps and one has to pay the back taxes, as well, so if you do not use a truck for 3 or 4 years and then want plates on it they make one pay the back taxes, but if you buy it no back taxes, as it is a new car or truck to you) I had a truck given to me and had it setting on the farm for about 6 years, and I finally got the title for it, he just signed it and not dated, I went down to get plates and they wanted me to pay back taxes even tho I never had the title in my name, and since the date was not on the title I dated it a few days before I was down, other wise I would have pay back taxes for the years I had it and not driven it or licensed it), it is all about revenue,

Have someone follow you to act as a 'buffer'. And have the current owner write you up a bill of sale in case you do happen to get stopped.

I believe you need to ensure you are legal if you decide to road it.

If you aren't on the road legally your insurance company may tell you to pound sand if you are involved in an accident and regardless of who is at fault for the accident, you might be the one on the hook for all expenses.

BTW...does it have air brakes? You may need an air endorsement on your license in order to legally drive it on roadways.

Pay the seller a little extra. Have him deliver it and give him a ride back home. Assuming it's licensed in his name and street legal. Then have his sign it over at your place.

Why would this be any different than buying a used car from an individual? I just have the signed over title and the bill of sale and drive it home. I have never had to go through the process of registration before getting the vehicle home, that would be hard to pull off. My insurance agent has always told me the same about being insured when I drive a new or used vehicle home, covered temporary. Do not know if it would be different with a truck that big. I agree you can not drive around or use the vehicle without current tags. I see vehicles with "In Transit" signs if they are traveling long distances.

2nd on paying the current owner to deliver. A PA personal auto policy only covers vehicles up to 12k gvw. Some companies even limit the # of wheels on a vehicle. If you have a commercial auto policy that's a different story.

You could get a trip permit which appears to be $50, which seems a tad high but that's back east for you. Or you could have the signed over title and a bill of sale as proof that you had just bought it, and as long as you are headed directly home from the seller the cop will hopefully let you off with a warning not to drive it on the roads, etc. I'd roll the dice on the latter myself; don't have the seller put the date on the title if you don't plan on putting it in your name right away to avoid "late penalty" cash grabs.

I thought of having the seller drive it, but he doesn't have insurance on it any longer. It looks like I'll get a temporary plate, as suggest. That was really my question...can you get a temp plate in PA without buying a regular plate. Plates for that truck are over $400, so I am told. I also thought of my insurance company possibly not covering me if I was not on the road legally. If it wasn't for that, I would probalby just skip the temp plate.

Any friend with Dealer Tags that owe you a favor.

I've called in a few favors over the year... stopped one time and the Highway Patrol verified the tax and insurance and good to go...
