Transporting Bucket Truck in Pennsylvania

I'd be interested to hear the results of getting a temporary plate. In particular is just having an auto insurance policy enough or does 'proof of insurance' mean (to the State) you need to have a policy for this exact vehicle before they will issue a temporary plate?

No need for special plates tags or escorts. A Bill of Sale dated on the driving day or exceptions for a weekend) is all you need to show (plus insurance coverage proof).

You will need to have the appropriate driver's licence rating for the vehicle you are driving, though, (over 26,000 lbs, air brakes, passenger carrying, etc.) You'll need to carry the title also, signed by the previous owner.

I think a signed title and a bill of sale makes you legal to get it home (I think this is right in MO)

You could get a trip permit which appears to be $50, which seems a tad high but that's back east for you. Or you could have the signed over title and a bill of sale as proof that you had just bought it, and as long as you are headed directly home from the seller the cop will hopefully let you off with a warning not to drive it on the roads, etc. I'd roll the dice on the latter myself; don't have the seller put the date on the title if you don't plan on putting it in your name right away to avoid "late penalty" cash grabs.

Per http://www.dot.state.pa.us/public/dvspubsforms/BMV/BMV Fact Sheets/fs-buysell.pdf they have a 90 day tag available with proof of insurance.
1.
An insurance identification card issued by an insurance carrier. A PennDOT approved self-insured individual(s) is authorized and required to produce an insurance ID card.
(NOTE: Hand printed identification cards issued by a Pennsylvania-licensed insurance company or agency areunacceptable.)
Insurance identification cards must contain the name and address of the insured, vehicle identification number, make and body style of the insured vehicle. In addition, the card must contain the insurance company name, policy number, and effective and expiration dates;
or,
2.
The declaration page of an insurance policy or a copy thereof;
or,
3.
A copy of a valid binder of insurance that contains all of the information required to appear on the ID card, excluding the policy number, and is signed and dated by a licensed insurance agent or broker; or,
4.
A copy of an application for insurance to the Pennsylvania Assigned Risk Plan that contains all of the information required to appear on the ID card, excluding the policy number, and is signed and dated by a licensed producer (insurance agent)
So, call your ins agent, tell them that you need to add a vehicle to the policy for a little bit, go to the DMV, get the temp tags and then drive it home.

Sounds like the OP has what I bought on Monday & worked yesterday, limbing trees. (TerexT292/F-450, DOT & boom certs in Mar '15)

IIRC, GVW is 16k lbs and I'm told CDL is not required for this class in MI. Usually we rely on MI's rule that one is allowed to drive a new vehicle home w/o even dealer plates, tho' mine was delivered with that.

btw, Terex service manual to arrive next week, and will share info.

Oh, what I learned so far:
- Ford PTO sw on dash is not used. There are 4 d-board switches added for boom.
- 'Restarting hydraulics' ("charge") can be done from the bucket.
- Engaging/disengaging the bucket's e-stop will restart hydro, too.
- Parking brake must be engaged to operate the boom/hydraulics.
- No outriggers needed on this model if you're parked level

Funny thing is that the dealer said, "Let me know if/when you want to sell it." It was already his. :confused:

There is often a best time of day to 'sneak' it home, & I tho' I don't plan to road it ever it may go 'around the block' to do a job. OP would only play those odds for an hour or so gettin' er home. (will be looking for threads/posts on this model ...)

Lol it reminds me of working in NC. A buddy of mine saw a car and said that's a Sunday car. A Sunday car is a car with no inspection and no insurance and is driven to church and then the grocery store on Sundays only.

Call over to your insurance company and ask what you need to do just to get it home, they may be able to set you up with a one day policy.

My family does a lot of business for a local Independant Agent...

Had a similar situation where I was picking up a car 300 miles away in Los Angeles.

He was not able to write a one day policy... what he did do was write a policy effective Saturday, printed the card and then canceled it Saturday night...

Just saying what he did with me not even asking.

Think that is basically what they do around here. I did it for a enclosed trailer and think it ended up costing me something like 40 cents.....

Have you checked on the price for an actual farm tag? When I lived in PA, I had farm tags on a dump truck but it's been too many years to recall what they cost. My insurer, Farm Family out of Albany, NY at the time required insurance on the truck even if I did not actually take it out on the road. Though, that cost was very minimal. Personally, sounds like an early Saturday or Sunday operation to me.
