If you're planting bare root trees you might be able to put a spade in the ground, open the gap a bit and set the tree in. Or build a tool to hook on the outside edge of a loader similar to the method to bolt on a tooth bar. Then press your loader down move forward and backward a couple of inches and move on.

That German rig is a beauty.

It certainly is. I need to beat the bushes to see what US distributor imports Fehrenbach equipment. Per MacGregor's comments, I agree that purchase of a complete unit is better than building one from scratch.

How large are your seedlings?

I just planted a bunch of bare root sand pines and used a $17 24" bulb planting auger on a cordless drill. Quick and easy!

I bought a dibble bar but it wouldn't go into my soil so it sits brand new in the wrapping.

I missed the part of your description saying that you didn't want to use your 3pt.

You could buy or build a hydraulic auger and fabricate a bracket to mount to the side of your loader, then use the loader to raise and lower it.

I use my Gravely walk behind with a sulky with the rotary plow pointed straight down to plant my saplings, it works perfect.
