Tree Puller for hard to get at trees

That tire trick works good for when you are really stuck in mud. A friend used a couple of big tires as bungees on a piece of equipment that was stuck. Pulled until he stretched the tires and crawlers tracks started slipping then parked it for a while. The tires kept tugging on the stuck tractor. When chain slackened up pulled some, kept it up until they had it free:thumbsup:

That's not the way I'm using the tire. I am just running the continuous chain through the eye of the tire and letting the tire hang on the chain. The idea is that if the chain were to fail, the weight of the tire will cause the chain to go to the ground instead of recoiling back at you on the tractor. I wouldn't try what you talked about for the same reason I wouldn't use cable to try to pull heavy loads. I don't want to add any bungee effect to the chain that would make it recoil even worse.

You guys scare me.... We had a local with a large field tractor pulling a truck out of a ditch with heavy chain .. and very unlike chain, which should not stretch-and-snap like wire rope or nylon (the worst) rope ..it came back. In some respects, it's too bad it didn't kill him.

I love the idea of fulcrum and leverage, but somehow I would only do it if I was able to anchor the chain to a fixed point and pull a short distance 90deg from that anchor point.

I've heard people that throw an old canvas tarp over the chain. Same principle as the tire.

Another trick I heard was to get an old tire rim (the bigger the better) and run the chain up over the top. Adds a little leverage and acts as a rolling fulcrum. Also directs the force straight up instead of sideways.

Here is what I came up with:

Remember, I just used what I had on hand so the pipe was rusty and I didn't take time to clean up the areas I was welding. I just used some 6011 to burn through. Not the prettiest welds I've done by far, but functional and will hold up; I'd put money on it. :laughing:

And here is what I finished up this evening.

Originally, I just cut a slit in the top of the pipe and inserted a piece of flat with the notch cut in the top. I then heated the pipe, beat it down against the plate and welded it in place. I looked at that and thought the strain might fold the plate over so I added a piece of 3/4 inch rod to each side.

The base is 5 feet wide and the upright is 6.5 feet. Hopefully, I can try it out this weekend. Unfortunately, other things keep coming up.

I like the choker idea. It took me a while to see it too. OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite includes a draw program. Chain is hard to draw. Does this fit your description?

Shouldn't the pipe be reversed on the pull chain? I thought the point of this sliding pipe was to get the rim of the pipe sucked into the tree as the chain was pulled tight. In this drawing the pipe would be folded as the chain was pulled, and the smooth side (instead of the open rim) would be against the tree. That seems like it would provide less grip than using a chain wrapped around the tree without the pipe at all.

I made one based on the attached pictures. It worked great. I don't recall who made each of these so I can't give proper credit. I found these pics on the web someplace. I made it from pieces in my scrap pile, so no cost was involed.

A little followup. I picked up a "horse panel" from TSC and cut a piece that fits the roll bar on my tractor. I cut it a little larger so if it is struck, it will push against the backside of the roll bar. That way I can just use large hose clamps to hold it in place. The panel is made from galvanized 1/4 inch wire welded in a 2" X 4" pattern. Yes, there is still a very slight chance a chain hook could make it through but I think it would at least be slowed down by the chain following. I think it should protect me very well.
