Paddy is eliciting ways to destroy trees that are not his to destroy. Shame on him for asking, and shame on anyone who abets him.

Well I agree it sounds a little fishy but lets give him the shadow of doubt.
First of all though, he ain't gonna destroy any 18" tree trying to pull it over, He's just gonna destroy his own equipment. Unless we're talking about very heavy equipment, not a utility tractor.

I dug a 4 foot deep trench around a 2 ft oak, cut every root right at the stump, and had a cable 20 feet up on the trunk. Had all I could do to pull what was left of that thing over with a 12,000 pound truck, and I mean some serious momentum backed shock load jerks.

There'll probably be pretty obvious damage from the chain/cable/rope he uses to pull it down. And unless there were a huge storm, or very wet ground, I'd be very suspicious about a tree simply falling over. You better get yourself an alibi and hire a bad guy to do the job. Tell him you don't care what it costs and you want it to look like an accident.

But, if you're really thinking about pulling it over, I'd use the cable and pulley solution and use a compound pulley setup to get more pulling power. And I'd pull from quite a distance and perpendicular to the way you expect the tree to fall. However, is someone else posted, pulling like this is quite dangerous. If anything breaks or lets go, it can be very dangerous.

I don't care to know why the trees are being pulled over. This thread is about how to pull them over. Go as high as you can with the attachment point, the wind has also been known to break the tops out of trees. Know that poplars won't die, and if any part of the root system is in the dirt that the dead tree will sucker out zillions more poplars. Wild poplars like wet feet, the roots will be shallow and flat and the soil will be mucky. Great candidate for a pull over. There's also no reason to not double the line to the tree which will double your pulling power. Attach a snatch block to the fall tree, snatch block to the anchor tree, Tie off cable at anchor tree, run cable to fall tree through snatch block, back to anchor pulley and then to winch.

I see very few safety risks other than the cable breaking. I am more concerned when falling trees with saws.

I am most curious as to the why he doesn't just cut em down. I have zillions of aspen on our acreage the little ones I push over with the bucket the bigger ones I just cut and leave the stump to be pulled out later. If its wood he wants just give me an address I will send you some i got lots:laughing::laughing::laughing:

-How about chaffed wrists from the handcuffs? Serious injury to the wallet, after the lawyer extracts his fee?

I dont get it. If you "can't" use a saw to get it down, what are you going to do when its down? You state you are in the middle of nowhere but concerned about using saw to get it down?

I can tell you this- if the tree is over 2 ft in diameter, and ground is dry, cant use saw, you are in a big big to get it down using cable. I should know. took me awhile to dig out the popular stump after I cut it down.

"theorically" to get a popular to fall over with root ball, you need to do diggin on the side you want tree to fall. fill it with water. attach cable HALFWAY up, not at top like other posters said. Its a very soft, snappy wood. Don't use a tractor to get it down. use a come along. tighten a come along and let tight over night. If tree is still not down, make sure the hole for tree is full of water to loosen soil around roots and tighten come along some more and wait again. sooner or later its gonna come down.

I agree with Mace. It doesn't sound like they are his trees to take down. I have some suggestions, but I'm not going to help and I think the OP should just forget the idea.
