I hear you on the "knealing" and "dulling the chain", as I have a walnut plantation that needs thinning (planted on 10 x 10 spacing) and I too, like to have the stumps low. Great idea.

I wouldn't spend the money on using round-up as it is meant just for applying to green, (my understanding anyway). Use Garlon or something that is designed for stumps. That would be a good addition to your snippers, if it could be kept out of the way and not get hooked up on brush.

With the walnut plantation, removing the small trees to keep it clean for other minor weed and brush control, is a pain. You should be able to cut them up or to drag them to a pile for burning with your snippers.

I've been told by an old farmer down the road, that if you paint the fresh cut stump with diesel fuel it will kill it, he also said you can drill 4 or 5 holes around the stump and fill them with rock salt and get the same results. I haven't tried either method yet, but with the price of diesel these day will try the rock salt.

Nice job on the shear. The chemical to put on freshly cut stumps is called Tordon. If used according to the label, it works without fail and isn't too expensive and is environmentally safe.

Garlon

Tordon

Seems these may both work for broadleaved plants, but Garlon more for applying to cut stumps and Tordon for spraying foliage (maybe more like Round-up?)

Gerard, here is a labeled picture of the new spool connected in series with the FEL spool. The arrows indicate the direction of flow of hydaulic fluid.
Hose A, an origenal hose was not changed; it comes out of the diverter block to the input of the FEL spool.
Hose B,an old hose comes out of the FEL spool and goes to input of new spool valve. This hose used to go the diverter block where hose C enters now .
Hose C, a new hose, comes out of new spool and goes back to the diverter block.
The diverter block has a slotted bolt head that directs the tractors hydraulic fluid either through the FEL circuit first, then the 3PH or to the 3PH first and then the FEL circuit. With the latter setting the 3PH has to be up for the FEL circuit to work- a pain in the butt /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I see that my Adobe Photoshop labels look pretty crude when seen on the bigger image but I think they are readable.

Beenthere, actually I have an 84 walnut tree plantation planted about 20 X24'. These are the American Forestry Technology/Purdue U trees with the 4' nurse tubes on a 10' 3/4 " electrical conduit. I put then in ~ 7 years ago and some are ready to be detubed. The walnuts are just north of the house. I'm in the middle of ~55 acres.

Nice job on shear, looks like a project I may have to build one of these winters.
For a little safety from trees coming over onto tractor (I know only 4-5" but ) how about some 1/2 x 2 or 3" strap in a hoop sticking 3' above the top tube, like forklifts have.
I also wondered about a tree saddle on top tube (semi circle)to hold tree so u can haul to the pile w/o falling over.

If you put roundup in a dish washing detergent bottle(like dawn), it makes a nice applicator. Just squirt it around the ring of the fresh cut bark(where the new shoots would come out) right after cutting and it should kill the stump. We did this a few times on lucust trees and it worked well. Just be sure to label the bottle accordingly for future use. Hope this helps.
