Trespassing signs, etiquette, good & bad neighbors

So a bunch of us want to be literal about the meaning of the words "no trespassing" but we can fudge on the meaning of property ownership? You own the property. If you can't afford to pay the taxes, that's an entirely different issue.

Cafeteria-style interpretation of the laws, where you pick and choose what you want to follow, appears to be an American tradition.

Thankfully we DO have the right in America to challenge the laws we disagree with. It’s a tradition. A good one. It’s also a right guaranteed by the Constitution.

I would have a heck of a lot more free time to fill up if people couldn’t petition to change the laws they don’t like. I don’t prefer free time. Paid time is much better.

Yep, we can challenge them. However, we usually have to obey them until they are changed. ;)

I can not honestly post what we the people should do to any politician or citizen that supports property taxes in any way or what should have been done to the ones responsible for the original deed of property ownership records that would give you the legal means to fight against the current status. Posting the words would probably get me banned so I hope this wasn稚 too aggressive!

Don稚 get me wrong I have no problem paying taxes at a fair rate based on income but I do know people who could not afford to pay in thier retirement, meaning they couldn稚 stay on thier own property simply because the minimum income for an exemption is set way too low. If you qualify for it you probably are already starving and going without heat into the first and last months of winter.

These days thanks to the patriot act...anyone with the right creds can basically do anything they want and actually deny a (suspect) citizen any and all of their rights for at least a certain period of time...

On a lessor note...In most places if a 911 return call does not satisfy the personnel they (the police) have the right to enter the house/building cited to the phone number that originally dialed 911...without any warrant or anything...they can legally break a door down...
My brother had his door broken down because his wife called 911 in the night, and he didnt know she called. She has really bad MS. Happened again last week, but he heard them knock, got to door before another bust job.

This is a common topic of discussion here and elsewhere. My observation is that opinions on trespassing and allowing access grows less tolerant as you go from east to west, and seems to reflect the way that this country grew. My brother came back from Arizona after my father passed away, and was pretty aggressive about posting the land everywhere and running people off; he said that he wanted the place to be known as "where the crazy guy with a gun is." One person he ran off turned out to be a family friend who liked to walk the woods road, and metal detect with his grandson; he also was a retired police officer.
To me, my brother's attitude ran off the very people that we would like to have around.
He also made a big deal over people stopping in the parking lot of the greenhouse, which had been closed since 2004. I finally asked "What are they hurting as long as they stay in their vehicles?" People gripe about driving while using cell phones, yet complain when they find a safe place to pull over so that they can make a call or all of the things which they shouldn't do while driving down the road.

In Maine and other New England states we have very strong laws protecting the landowner if somebody accidently gets hurt on private property. Even Joe Bornstein wouldn't touch one of those cases, as the complaintant has to cover the landowner's costs when they lose. (Not applicable where the landowner is charging for access.)

Since the law was passed in 1979 there has never been a successful lawsuit from somebody getting hurt while recreating on private property.

I don't know about the East vs West trespassing tolerance. In the part of the west where i grew up, there were few, no trespassing signs. People could go hunting, opening and closing gates as needed. Infrequently, there would be a problem, and the owner would tell the visitors to leave, and that was that. Then, as the story goes, there was an issue with some hunters and the owner wanted them to leave, they wouldn't and it went to court and ruled that without, no trespassing signs, you couldn't trespass people off of your land. In theory you could still prosecute for damages etc, but that's much more difficult than just telling people they are not longer welcome to use your land and to leave. So now the signs go up and keep the people you probably wouldn't mind recreating on your land out, and that leaves those people that don't bother getting permission or don't want you to know they are on your property.

I've posted my property and the private road so i can tell people that i don't trust, to leave. I'm not a stickler about running people off.

We had unexpected visitors from the neighbors relatives, visiting from Norway. We had met them previously at a "get together" at the neighbors. They had went for a walk on the road wanted to see an American "farm" and look at our animals so they ended up at our place. I told them, i don't really have a farm, but gave them a tour where they ooh and aahed or the baby angora goats and fed the llamas, played with the dogs. All good.

That's the kind of thing which needs to be addressed. I just glaze over comments of people saying that we don't own land because of taxes; yet if I can't say who I don't want on my land then I really don't own it.

Yeah, it always seemed strange that I can’t get someone charged with trespassing, unless I have No Trespassing signs up.

When I go to the bank, there is no sign that says No Bank Robbing.

We are kind of fortunate here. Our property taxes are very low, unemployment is very low, and cost of living is very low. Our house taxes for a 1350sq' house on 1 acre in the county is under $600. Our 20 acres of vacant land is under $400.

I think they charge me 600 just to write out the bill!
