This Russian fighter plane held its own with German fighters; touted as Russia's best and one of the top 10 fighter planes of WWII, a number of these planes were reproduced in the 1990's in the original factory. What was it?

In 1943, a stunt involving 4 B-17's Flying Fortresses occurred during a public event in NY City. This stunt angered Mayor Laguardia such that he complained in the press that the pilots should be disciplined. The pilots were reprimanded and fined $75. What was this event and where in NYC did it occur?

No takers? The event was the 1943 3rd game of the World Series between the Cardinals and the Yankees, at Yankee Stadium. The stunt was a flight of 4 B-17s that took a detour and buzzed the ball game.

Most everyone knows that the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima Japan on August 6, 1945. The Uranium bomb was dubbed "Little Boy" and was dropped from a B-29 named the Enola Gay. The second bomb was dropped 3 days later on Nagasaki. What was the name given to this bomb, how was it different from the first and what was the name of the airplane that dropped it?

It was named Fat Boy. It had a different firing mechanism then Little Boy. IIRC, Little Boy was a gun type and Fat Boy was some sort of implosion fire method. The plane was another B29. Seems like it was named after the pilot....his names escapes me.

What was the last name of the weaponeer who dropped Little Boy? I have relatives with the same surname. Heck, we could be related :)

Incredibly Balsa is a hardwood. Something to do with how the seeds are produced.

I don't know the exact number but it starts with making bacon and ends with melting snow of winter roads.:D.
Why did they say a man was "worth his salt"?

Fat Boy. Plutonium bomb, Boxcar. I am guessing on the bomb composition.

Correct. The plane was "Bockscar", named after the pilot who normally flew it. It was flown on the Nagasaki mission by another pilot. Fat Boy was a plutonium bomb, Little Boy was a Uranium bomb. As mentioned before, the firing mechanisms were different. As I recall, Little Boy was ignited, as mentioned before, by "firing" a portion of the critical mass into the rest of the mass, and Fat Man was ignited by a shaped charge around the mass that drove the Plutonium inward as in an implosion.

Interesting you should mention that. I know that the bomb was outfitted at Tinker Field in OKC. I also am told that the engineer who designed the bomb cradle and loading mechanism was a local guy whose last name was Garlick. I am acquainted with his son, and that is the story he tells.
