I'm guessing Ward Bond or Harry Carey. I know Ward Bond was on TV in "Wagon Train", but I've no idea if Harry Carey ever did a TV show.
Early in John Wayne's career mean the mid to late 1930's, so the TV show would have to be in the 50's or early 60's.
