I take the FEL off completely when I'm mowing. I have wovenwire mesh horse fencing and the bucket reeks havoc with the fence when I 'm close to it. I don't feel safe with the bucket overhead when mowing. I put on four 55lb suitcase weights for balast with the mower (5ft hog) on the rear.

Excellent, well thought out responses & explanations from everyone. :) Thank you!

Clearly, there is no one answer... no real consensus... but rather lots of very good reasons for doing things one way or another. Still, I was a little surprised at how few folks remove their buckets and mount something else... also known as *my* own bright idea! :D Oh well... seemed to make sense to me to increase front vision while still protecting the tool carrier... but maybe I should rethink the need.

Why rethink it? If it works for you keep doing it. Who knows, if you stop you'll probably end up breaking the tool carrier. Murphy's Law...

The FEL comes off when mowing because I have a small yard with a fence. It's off and back on in minutes, the only problem is getting hyd oil on my hands. I can live with that...

Well, the fact is that I've been mainly leaving the bucket on and working around it for now. I'd love to work with the bucket off more often, but I am concerned about damaging the tool carrier. I am going to order a blank mount anyway for another project and was just wondering if I should order two and have one around just for "bucket-off" tool carrier protection. Maybe mount a tow hitch receiver on it for added convenience... but mainly use it just to protect the tool carrier from hitting rocks and stuff. Doesn't seem to be common practice, so maybe my concern is unfounded.

I agree with Jim. I leave the loader on for about 90% of the time but will drop the bucket when I'm using the flail mower in tight spots. But when I mow the waterways and road shoulders I take the loader off. Its amazing what kind of visisbility you have. Its like your driving a new tractor all over again.

THe class III New Holland has great visibility from the operator's station with the loader attached but unattached, the view is incredible.
