I forgot that I had not wrapped this up. After multiple tests, it turns out that the brushes inside the generator were worn out and moving around. As they would move around, the gen light would flash on and off. Gen rebuild did the trick. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Glad you got her diagnosed.

Try this.. polarize again, IE.. jump bat and arm with a jumper wire.

Start tractor, disconnect field from genny, ground field to genny case.. now jump at and arm... charge lamp go off? if so.. bad regulator.

On the bottom of your regulator, there should be a bias resitor between ground and field... if not.. you have the wrong regulator...

this test needs to be done at 2/3 throttle.. gennies are not very effieient at low speed.

most gennies that motor will charge.. most gennies that charge will motor.

A 424 has British origins, and has a very good chance of having Lucas electrical components and a B circuit charging system. Let's find out which it is before we advise how to polarize the circuit, not after we smoke his new regulator.

Rick.. .....I guess you didn't read post #2 in this thread... which tells exactly what you are suggesting.. to ID the reg circuit type.. and how to do just that. My Post #4 warns about about applying power to the field circuit before circuit type is known.. and post #5 pretty much removes those concerns.

Oh, I read them.
I simply didn't retain any of it.
Oops.

I had a used VW Variant square back sedan with a generator when I was stationed at Minot AFB in North Dakota. First winter I had it I was led a merry chase trying to trouble shoot/diagnose the genny. Driving the 15 miles from the base to town (Minot, ND) the little red idiot light would sometimes come on for the first 10 miles or so then go out. By the time I got to town the batt was charged some and all was OK. Couldn't find any problem. Brushes and commutator were OK. Then sometimes returning to the base the same thing would happen again, red light for 10 miles or so then normal ops. Batt would get a bit low during the approx 10 miles (+/- 3-4) if it was at night due to draw of headlights but charge back up some after the red light went out.

Standard practice in ND in winter is to put at least a trickle charger on the batt overnight so I never had the batt go flat. Still, It was really bugging me.

Think about it!.................What could it be????????

Post your best guess(es)

What I eventually found and how I cured it, available on request if anyone is interested.

Incomplete VR ground path.

Just a guess. . .moisture in the brushes froze and held them so they would not make contact with the commutator until the engine warmed up and the warm air thawed the ice, allowing the brush tension spring to push the brushes into contact with the commutator.

Did I win? What's my prize? Do I get the big bucks like the moderators?
