Truck mounted air compressor?

A York compressor is commonly used, as it has its own oil reservoir. I have one off of an 80's Bronco that will go in one of my trucks some day, run off a belt from the alternator with a dual pulley.

Some good suggestions so far. I have a IR T30 truck tire compressor that I have been thinking to mount on my ag service truck. The truth is that this is over kill to air up the occasional tractor tire and no real need to do a lot of mechanic work in a customers field either. I think I will check out these smaller 12 v compressors as they should be a practical solution.

I picked up a two piston air conditioner pump off a 73 Toyota celica. It is tested to 425lbs so no problem with the pressures we need. I put a propane tank for reservoir with an electric shut off. When using I have a switch in the cab with pressure gauge. It is very handy for trailer tires and such.

It has it's own crankcase so is totally independent to itself.

I was starting to get ready to order a compressor for the truck but was talking with my friend who was hooking an inverter up to one of his tractors for a job in their vineyard and it got me thinking about just getting a good inverter and using one of the compressors I already have.

Does anyone see a problem with mounting an inverter in the bed? If no issues is there any reason I couldn't hook it up to one of the upfitter switches on the dash? Last question, if this idea isn't completely crazy for some reason what do you guys think about inverters as I could use a crash course on them so I buy something good.

I have 2 twin tank emglo portable compressors as well as 2 pancake compressors.

I use a inverter for my airless compressor in the van... works good for inflating tires and the compressor can be used with my underlayment senco stapler.

Bought all three in 1990 and still going strong... the 2000W inverter cost a fortune back then and I still use it for my sawzall, small sidewinder skill saw, etc.

I would think mounting the inverter inside the cab would be essential... West Marine has some inverters for boats...kind of pricey last I looked... still need to be protected.

I was thinking in the bed would be ok with a cap on the bed to keep the elements out. Is there a different reason why the cab would be better?

I'd think anything mounted in my bed would eventually get damaged, unless it was in a bed mounted tool box or some other sort of protective metal enclosure. Also, you have to consider heat dissipation. Mount it in a watertight box and it might be airtight, too, and eventually cook itself. Just some things to consider. Personally, I'd mount it in the cab somewhere and either use extension cords or install an outdoor waterproof outlet to the rear of the truck somewhere protected.
