Truck Restoration

The earlier trucks had style but were low on driver comfort. The cab on my White is so narrow that you can touch both doors at the same time. Dad always said you could sunburn both arms at the same time.

I've always found it amazing how the quickly visible bottom line created work environments that placed human comfort last. I've always felt that a comfortable person is a productive person, yet look how many decades it has taken for that to catch on in numerous industries.

Many years ago, I was in charge of specing out PC's for a CAD system to be used in the client's city. The engineering company I worked for assigned a cheap project manager and he was grousing over the cost of 20" monitors over the 15" or 17" ones he wanted to obtain. I put together a cost analysis of how spending the bucks on larger monitors would save money and time through the designers being more productive by not having to zoom in and out as much to design a computer chip factory. We got the bigger monitors.

Many years ago when I asked our welder to teach me to run a proper bead. He "insisted" I get comfortable? Said I could never run a decent bead till absolutely "comfortable". He was so right!!

I used to admire the welders because they were at least,..."comfortable" while working,..(Most of the time).

OK, jacknifing the topic back to TRUCK RESTORATION just for a sec. Seems funny I stumbled on this particular thread last week and was completely seduced by Jesse's two 1950's White truck restorations, which lead me to the various links by Jesse and Robert to a wealth of truck restorations.

That got me fascinated with a local big truck/fire/bus etc "Junk-Yard" and my "thinking" about the idea of an old Kenworth near the fence that seems a possible candidate? (IF,..I was serious?)

COINCIDENCE: I'm in town today buying tools and bumped into an old buddy and former farm neighbour who works for a local Trucking company and he's in-charge of the latest company project: RESTORATION of a 1954 Kenworth highway tractor for their flagship!!

He invited me to swing by and see the frame-up restoration in its early stages. WOW !!! I guess I'll be "swingin'-by" more than often for this!

Just had to share that one,...I'm excited for him!

Tug, wait until you get that first issue of Wheels of Time. Check out the classifieds, there's usually several trucks for sale close to your area. Trucks are like tater chips, it's hard to stop with just one.

OH,..Wheels Of Time huh Jesse? They didn't say "what" was coming, just that "my order was being shipped" so I'm not sure what I'm expecting? Sounds good to me!

Just gotta say,...ooh,.aah,...my neck is aching, my back is sore and my eyes are so strained of late going through all these fantastic pictures like a teenage boy with his first Playboy magazine, just can't get enough!!!

Feet on the floor, both hands on the desk and nothing to show for my time but an ear to ear grin of total pleasure!!! Everything else is suffering but my "mental" drawing board of plans and dreams!

mjncad : ...I'm most certainly going to take my camera with me when I visit this KW restoration. Of course I'll have to check with my buddies Boss for permission prior to snapping pictures.

My wife kids me with: "it's often easier to apologize later,.. than "try-in-vain" to get permission first!"
However, since this is a long term project and not wanting to jeapardise my buddies situation,..I'll ask permission first.

I'll talk to the boss and (maybe) suggest a running photo-commentary on the project? That might get me a tad more involved? (Never done that before).

WHOA,..hold on here! It's late, I'm tired and my mouth (fingers) are revvin' a shade faster than my brain,...before we get outta-control here,...I'm gonna split 'er back down a couple notches, apply some "AIR" and ease on into this Rest-Stop ahead.

Good night all,...ZZZzzzzzz

I should stop looking for trucks while I'm still ahead. Now I've found another '59 White 4400TD like my '59 that's about 350 miles west of here. I'll know for sure after I've seen more pictures but it looks very restorable. One of the main reasons I'm interested in it is for possible spare parts for my current trucks. It has the same engine, trans and gauge layout as my '59. I could pull gauges from the donor truck, have them restored and put them in my truck, then put the old gauges in the donor truck until I can have them restored. Makes sense to me!

OH Yes,..You-betcha ! Nothin' like having your very own parts department! Except, you may eventually begin to think twice about "borrowing" parts from what is "beginning" to look more and more like part of the growing "fleet",...than a parts donar!!??

I say that from a taste of experience from many years back when this "same" buddy and I were collecting '70 GMC pick-ups for a "parts-dept" while we each restored our own.

I ended up with one good one while he went on to do several and I donated my left-overs to him. He moved and I still have one 71 - 3/4 ton with snowplow that has been retired and all that holds it together now,....is an awful lotta rust and a whole lotta great memories! Darn shame but we never considered taking pictures back then which is odd as I collected many hot-rod and custom car mags back then. Cameras were much more work I spose.

OK Jesse, . . my "Playboy" came today so I don't see how I can possibly get off my chair for quite a while but I thank you for putting me in this position!!!

I have some aquaintances from another town who did an almost identical restoration on a Flxible Bus like on the cover of Wheels of Time. They made a family camper for country music week-ends and except for colours its almost the same! Great memories in and around that one! Guitars bounce nicely off the side late at night.

~(Just posted a couple non-related items over in Owner/Operator under Tractor Pictures if you like).

Great Paintings!

Glad you got the WOT so quickly. They used to send a few back issues when you joined up. My truck will be in the PPG ad in the Jan/Feb issue. You need to join in the discussion forum on the ATHS website. Many of the members don't have a truck, you just need to like vintage iron and trucking history to participate!
