Wow, this has been a quick lesson on rocks/gravel. I'll ask around before buying as I don't want to get ripped off anymore than anyone else does. There is a big excavating company about a mile down the road. I'll stop by there and see if I could get a couple of loads for a good price. A long time ago there was a quarry down by the river about 20 miles from here. I had a 3/4 ton chevy back then and would drive over there and the guy would put a half scoop from his loader in the back for like $10. The drive home would be very interesting. It was ok until I would go over a dip in the road...the front end would get very light on the return bounce. Scared me somewhat. Back to now, I have good access so that won't be a problem. I'll just have it dumped in the driveway up close to the house and spread it myself with the tractor. I don't want dump truck wheels sinking in around the yard. Makes for rough cutting on the mower and the red head would never let me hear the end of that! Probably sick her chihuahuas on me again.

..."what we call 3/4 crushed dense pack, which is small crushed stones with a cement like powder mixed in..."

That is what I was referring to as "crusher" run. That stuff packs down like cement once it has gotten good and wet from rain and then dried out.

I pay $24/ton, and trucks are normally 16-20 ton capacity. $90 haul fee. A good driver can spread it out the back of the truck and then you can finish up with tractor.

I paid $17 a ton for 3" minus including delivery. That was three years ago. Normally everything in CT is more expensive, but not rock. The glaciers left plenty around.

Around here crusher run is called 23A. Basically, crushed granite with fines. Crazy how the same stuff is called different tings depending on where you are. I had 60 or 80 tons (CRS kicking in) delivered this fall for the drive. The driver did a decent job spreading it but still left me enough work to do to have a few hours of tractor fun.

Luckily for me my wife keeps the books at one of the larger gravel pits/trucking companies in the area. They are a great company to work for, so good that when she tried to quit so she could work on her online jewelry business full time they wouldn't let her. They just said just come in a few hrs a week and get the essential stuff done no one else knows how to do. Anyway, I've needed material from them every couple of years and the owners are great. They always seem to "forget" to bill her for any of it. :dance1:

A good driver can spread your gravel using chains on his tail gate.
Generally 3-4 links and he controls the spread with his speed. Saves a whole lot of work.
A good driver can lay down a nice even 4"-5" any time.
If he is a contractor he'll try to sell you on using his grader or backhoe. Independent trucker won't care and comply more readily.

call the closest rock quarry, ask the price per ton on 3/4 crusher run delivered to your place. should come on tri-axle truck 25 to 27 tons. Quarry will probably be cheapest. grade your drive before you have them tail gate it or you will still have pot holes after they spread it

I just had a dump truck deliver approx 15 tons of ABC Crusher Run, what it's called locally, for $400 a load. Local trucking company
has a one hour drive each way to get it, nothing but sand around here. Sand is dirt cheap, no pun intended, at 110 a load delivered.
These trucks leave awful ruts in your lawn, better assume the worst there and protect where possible. Particularly if you have a paved driveway where edges have to be crossed. My guy got stuck constantly, didn't have aggressive tires on his dump truck and I wound up pulling him out with my tractor repeatedly.
So there's another issue, are the trucks equipped for offroad if that is your need? Just don't assume they are like pickups on your lawn...

I used recycled asphalt for my parking lot / driveway. It was roughly $400 for an end dump delivered. They were 25-28 tons per load.

That's what I have on my driveway - it's called 'nitpack' here - basically everything that falls out of the bottom of the crusher. A triaxle dump (12 wheeler) is 24 tons, or 18 yards. I just got a couple of loads a few months ago - paid $235/load delivered. I've put 22 loads into my driveway so far, or just over 1 meeeeeeeellion pounds (Dr. Evil voice). One load covers 12' x 90' x 6" deep, incidentally.
