Truck weight registration

This is exactly how Budget, Ryder, etc.... can rent joe blow a 5 ton straight truck. They register them for well under the GVW.

I doubt truck rental companies would register their trucks under the GVW. At most truck rental places anyone with a regular drivers license can rent a straight box truck up to 26,000. If the truck is over 26,000 they require the driver to have a CDL. A 5 ton truck isn't much more than a 1 ton pick up. I have rented many straight box trucks over the years. Some were under 26K some over but their registrations listed the GVW. They are not going to take a chance being sued in a lawsuit if some truck renter gets in an accident with a 26K rated truck and have the law find out they only registered it for 20K.

florida apparrently is one of those states that doesn't care what weight it is as long as you pay for it.

they will let you pay/ tag it for more or less.

I get asked each time i do my tags if i want to lower them or raise them. ( $$ )

I have received a ticket for exactly this. I looked at the GVW on the door sticker, loaded it up, and found out that I was well over the Registered Gross.

Anderson Columbia has a 6 wheel prime truck; from the mid 70s; that is tagged at 80,000. Can I it haul that much with out breaking in half, no way. Are they legal to haul upto that much; that's more questionable if anyone where to look at axles etc. If you pay the up charge for a semi dump you can gross what 88k? Same truck with standard tag, 80k. It's all a money grab.

Do you even need a tag and insurance? If it's all on your property you dont; and if your a "bona-fide" farm then you probably won't need a tag to run down the road ~25 miles.

Did you sue the rental company for your ticket since they didn't register the truck for the proper GVW.

i think you missed the point. they registered it for A legal weight they paid for.. that's what it was legal for after that.

ditto that. we have 6 wheel sand spreader and prime ( old etnyr ) and water trucks like you mention.. ford 8000's and other old 70's era things. all of them are over 26k.. but under heavy vehicle usage tax level. Pay and go.. florida don't care. heck.. we have a 1.5ton service truck tagged 26000

Yes, but if I needed a truck to haul an 8000 lb. load I'd go to a truck rental place. I'd say I need to rent a truck to haul my load, the truck can weigh up to 18K and have a GVW of 26k. If they rent me a truck with a 26K GVW saying it will legally handle the load and I get a ticket in a weigh station because they only registered it for 20K and on the scales I was 26K I would have a lawyer sue them for the fine I got because I expected to rent a truck rated at 26K and they cheaped out and only registered it for 20K. It should not be my responsibility to ensure they register the truck for the maximum GVW. As the renter of the truck I should only have to look on the door tag.
It's one thing to register over GVW (and I'll never understand why anyone would want to pay more to the state than they have to). But to register it for less to save money shouldn't be legal. A truck renter has the expectation he is getting a vehicle able and legal to haul a specific load.
I guess the next time I rent a 26K or larger truck I'd better look at the reg. to see what they registered it for and compare it to the door tag..

He said he looked at the door sticker.. not the registration. IE. he accidentally overloaded the truck because he did not see what it was registered for.

the registration on my f350 and my f450 does not match the door sticker and they are perfectly legal if i pay attention to my registered weight.
