Truck weight registration

All Ford F350 duallies are listed as > 6 tons GVWR 2015 Ford Super Duty | View Payload Specifications | Ford.com.

How widespread is that law or is it Federal?
That's federal: also, if your trailer is over 2000lbs your vehicle is supposed to be register for the gvwr of the tow vehicle AND trailer. If the trailer is over 3000 lbs you're required to hagw brakes on all axles... any vehicle weighing over 6000 lbs is SUPPOSED to hage commercial plates in this state at least... curb weight of most full sized pickups and SUVs approach or exceed that weight with 2 passengers and no payload.

You guys are going to confuse the **** out of everyone. The registrations are state specific. Also, You are only required to run log books if your running out of state or so many air miles from home IIRC its 150 miles. (Never ran them so someone can correct me if i'm wrong.)

As long as your registered for more than what the vehicle weighs running down the road, your good. If your not running down the road, don't register it. (or run on a sunday on the back roads!)

J
I own a GMC 6500 (baby cat, Allison Auto)---door sticker says 18,000 Rear Axle, 10,000 Front Axle----naturally you would think 28,000, so CDL right? Nope, derated by manufacturer to say 26,000! My truck was a former Moving truck originally from Maryland. If I put a homemade trailer on it with a GVW of 1 lb---CDL, because you cross 26001. I tow a 9 ton trailer with it so my combined is 44,000---so Class A (formerly called Class 1), Combination License required---which I have (and a bunch of other endorsements) so they get me for about $130 every few years to renew!! I'm telling you guys, follow the max fines/rules and you will be in the clear!!

So back to the rental yard, under 26,000 is where they reside. I call it the gray area... If you rent a 5 ton truck, no trailer, no worries. Put a small trailer on it, then you need a health card and safety gear, you are over 10,001---by my States rules. Whatever you do, don't put a big trailer on it and cross 26,001----if you don't have a CDL---cause you need one to do that.

Doesn't work like that. A CDL in that case would only be required if the trailer exceeded 10,000 pounds, as long as the truck was 26K or less.

You can legally drive a truck <26,001 pounds hauling a trailer <10,001 pounds with no endorsements except Fed DOT requirements if involved in interstate commerce

That raises another question; if you are driving a vehicle registered for 6 tons or more; or using any vehicle for commerce; you are required to abide by many of the same laws of a commercial trucker- including running a log book. When you rent a Ryder truck, do any of the minimum wage clerks point that out to you? Does Ryder supply the log or do they add that onto your bill?

jst - Are you sure you didn't confuse lbs for kilograms? What law do you reference?

From Regulations Section | Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration definitions:

Commercial motor vehicle (CMV) means a motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicles used in commerce to transport passengers or property if the motor vehicle
(1) Has a gross combination weight rating or gross combination weight of 11,794 kilograms or more (26,001 pounds or more), whichever is greater, inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds), whichever is greater; or
(2) Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of 11,794 or more kilograms (26,001 pounds or more), whichever is greater; or

Actually you are both correct to an extent. A vehicle with a 26,000lb GVWR and a trailer with a 7,000lb GVWR (think car hauler). Would require a class B CDL. Because trailer is under 10,001lb. The 18,000lb trailer your reference is enough to even place a 3/4ton (8600 or 9200)lb truck into requiring a class A CDL. Former company brought in a KY Vehicle Enforcement officer and that was a specific question asked. Along with answer given.

And then I see F350's with 40 ft travel trailers going down the road all the time, as well as big diesel pushers with air brakes all the time as well. No CDLs there.

In my state at least, rv's are exempt

Which is a peeve of the truckers, with some justification.
I saw an older F150 pulling a 30 foot camper a while back; talk about the tail wagging the dog.
The bumper was nearly dragging on the ground. Properly set up it may have been OK; but this wasn't.
