We call those a yo-yo in Texas. Amazon has them made by Ames and one that's open on one side of the triangle is called a whip or whipper. You never have to mix gas for those 'weed eaters.'

Yep, that was a yo-yo in Oklahoma, too, and I've had a lot more experience with one than I ever wanted when I was a kid, too. Around our place, that was the ONLY thing we had to knock down any weeds or grass that was too tall for a reel type push mower. In later years, I sometimes heard them called a weed knife, but never heard of a sling.

That's a sickle, first lawn mower I used many years ago. Cut the high grass for the rabbits and pony bedding.
