I finally got 1 young (under 25) applicant. He is a novice welder and does not know the cutting torch. He is a "Tech" type and I really don't know if he will take to shop work. I may give him a trial period and see how quick a learner he is. I really have reservations about training him and then have him go for a tech job a year down the road. What to do? Ken Sweet

That's the quandry of any employer. Pay to train the guy, but realise that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Offer him a decent wage, but reserve enough so that you can afford a 25% pay increase after 6 months or a year. Also a decent benefit package after the same time period, which still can keep you in business.(Profitably) In my experience, that's what most small employers have done.

+1. You never know, he might just find he likes the job and want to stay.

Even if he does decide to move on somewhere down the road, he's looking for work and after all that we have discussed in this thread, just the fact that he's looking should count for something.

2x on hiring if there are no other red red flags. The experience working with a young person will pay off down the road.

They are DIFFERENT but I learned if I would chill often the results they bring can be great.

We do a 30/60/90 day set down review and will cut them loose a any review. They know this up front.

The cell thing bother me at first then the texting but I came to learn texting saved a lot of time telephone time and staff is happier if they get a word from home letting them know the kids are off the bus etc.

We do verbal warnings on issues and then written and on the third written it is exit time. Yes there are things that will cause a sudden exit but so far that has not happened.

Do NOT assume they "know" how to be a good employee. Let them know what you expect and train them double well. Taking them to lunch once is positive and just bring them into the office or in your case out on the yard could work and just give them some company history and chew the fat.

It is very important that you tell them some of your gross screw ups when telling your history so when they screw up they will not be so scared.

If replacing fluids have them set everything out and tell you where they are going to put it. Later on you can let them do it without checking with you UNLESS they have a question BUT you can have them keep the containers, filter boxes ect can you or a senior staff can see/sign off the right thing was used in the right place so any error can be addressed before it leaves the shop.

Our kids are 13. The daughter can look at, figure out and fix about anything and has for years. The son can do math in his head and is strong as an ox but he is just starting to grasp machinery repair.

The point is kids all learn different and have strong and week points.

I bet you will get more than you give. I have people that has been with me for years that came just looking for something short term.

If you have any repeating major stressing over the guy just make SURE he is not there on day 91.

We ve been jumping through hoops to get an extra hand at work. Ive had lots of folks that will work for cash and as mentioned drawing a disability check for 700 to 800 per month then wanting cash. We dont hire them. We pay for experieance and if you learn someting you get a raise like gettin CDLs, learning to set grade, and mechanicing. We had a guy stop by and wanted to work for 10 an hour cash I told him I cant do that as the company pays out checks. He was telling me the oh so sad story of how he was an alcoholic and drew DI for it but he could deer hunt 12 hours a day. His wife Was drawing a check for having Rhumitoid Arthritis but still competes in the local rock climbing competition. My favorite check drawers are the ones that claim bad backs
and draw a check for it but can deer hunt, and haul scrap iron.

I quit having pity o nthe sad stories after I got to seeing folks that draw disability and arent disabled and then see people that actually need it but cant get it.

It's odd, but it seems the people with true disability would rather be, and in a lot of cases are working.

Same thing here in Ky. I am afraid a big percentage of our nation is on the "Draw" illegally and there is nothing gumment can do about it. If they were all caught, we would lose about as many gumment employees that administer the programs. Ken Sweet

I think we are rewarding these offices based on how much they can pass out. I am told by some teachers they are not allowed to fail a failing student because it would hurt their pay and school's funding if test scores come in below a certain level so they teach the test. This stuff about the schools I have heard from teachers personally and not something on the news or in the papers. This is sad news when we hire someone thinking a HS degree cares specific meaning.

If one gets what they reward maybe we need to rethink what we are rewarding.

The way manufacturers keep adding electronics onto mechanical systems, maybe it's good that he has some interest in tech.

Sometimes whether people stick around has to do with how they get along with and fit in with everyone else.
