I think we are rewarding these offices based on how much they can pass out....

This is absolutely true! The feds give the states money. For some programs the states then dole this money out to "non profit" organizations that administer the funds. If the administering organization doesn't use all the funds allocated to them, they get less on the next allotment. For some of these programs, all it takes is to go in, tell them you don't have any income, and the only proof of no income that is required is a note from a neighbor that you aren't working! No IRS or SSA checks are performed, or even can be.

That hits the nail on the head.

Must be nice to get paid to take other peoples money and give it to other people. Why do we put up with this? I guess because there are so many getting money and voting to keep the money coming.

Saw a report on the local news about the food stamp programm and that the Feds reward increasing the state's percentage. :(

Well, I hired the young man in his early twenties. Today was his first day. I am betting he stays until he gets a Tech job offer. I hope I am wrong. I really like him and he only lives 3 miles away from here. Someone sent me a PM and suggested I hire a retired farmer that already knew farm machines and mechanics. I already have 3 of those guys and they are great, however, they can only make 14,000 per year without messing up thier Social Security checks. What to do?? Ken Sweet

Ken that he sounds good.

Do have family that will know how to run the business, will just close shop or find a buyer, etc?

If you find the right person consider training them to be your replacement someday maybe. A business not managed by the owner is worth a lot more money in the view of some buyers.

Around here most just lock the gate when they want to retire. Working with interested young staff can bring back some good memories sometimes.

We started the second generation in our business many years ago when My youngest Son, Greg Bought 1/2 interest in the business after he graduated from College. He currently runs one of our 2 stores. I am already grooming the third generation. That is what keeps it exciting and challenging. Ken Sweet

Ken that is great. Nothing like a family business run by the family.

Yep - great until 2012 when the inheritance tax rolls back to 55% on estates valued over $1,000,000. Then when you inherit a business, farm, company etc, the heirs have to sell the business or take on debt to pay the taxes on what they inherited because even though a business may have a VALUE of a million $, doesn't mean it has that in liquid assets.

This is a point the knuckleheads in DC who pass these laws fail to grasp. Why not make the tax 100% and just say wealth can no longer be handed down from generation to generation? Would work well in the "redistribution" philosophy of the current white house resident!
