Some of the older CAT equipment like mine specified Motor Oil for hydraulic system.

It would seem those yellow jugs should meet the 40 year old motor oil spec... or not?

we have older cat equipment that spec'd 30w and 40w for hyds and trans oil.

our dealer rep said that int he 70's that was fine... they are having us put either aw64 or torq fluid 56 in them ( tf56 is utf fluid )

i can honestly say we are having LESS hyd issues over the last say.. 10ys than the prev 17ys i have been with the co.. when we ran 30w and 40w engine oil...

///and it's not because the machines are getting any younger either...

"Another important issue that speaks to the depth and breadth of the problem can be seen by taking a closer look at the wording on THF labels. Many fluids on the market don’t even say the products meet Deere, Case and other OEM specifications. Instead, they use such phrases as (“recommended for,” “commonly used,” “typically used,” or “can be used where the following recommendations are made.” Sound familiar?) "

Sorry, this don't sound familiar to me at all, because I don't look for those words on spec. labels that I read, this is one reason why buying trans. fluid for my L3400DT tractor and save money at the same time is so confusing. When I look on TSC or Shell Rottela trans. fluid spec. label, I read MEETS and or EXCEEDS tractor specifications, and some labels have a list of over a dozen tractors, now does the trans. fluid meet the specs. or not.

Then to make matters more confusing, when I bought my Kubota, they sat if I don't buy their $90.00/5gal UTD trans fluid, the tractor will fall apart, and a lot of people on this forum will say the same thing, especially if their well off financially, and Kubota doesn't even make their own oil. Then if I bought a JD tractor, now I have to use their oil or the tractor will fall apart, and it probably the same with the red, and blue tractors. There's over a dozen different brands of oil out there and Kubota says not to use them because they don't meet our specs., so this must mean that the Tractor Co. and Oil Co. is lying and telling the truth at the same time. Know wonder I'm quandary.

Thanks to this thread, I now know where TSC tractor trans oil is made and it only took me 1/2 hour to find it, it would only took me 1/2 minute if I had better directions. I click on the 4 year old link 5 times, and al it did was take to the TCS web site where it showed Travellers Hydraulic Fluid, I started clicking on the tabs that took me in ten different directions, then a miracle happen, I clicked on the FAQ tab, and finally, all the specs. of who, what, where this oil is made, Warren Distribution (since 1922) is based in Omaha, Nebraska, a sigh of relieve, its not made in China. Now can someone do the same thing with Kubota UDT trans oil?, probably don't have to with Shell Rottela trans. oil, I assume they make their own oil.

remember.. a manufacturer can't force you to use a specific brand of oil, only a specification for the oil, unless one of the 2 things:

1, they provide the oil free

2, the apply for an exemption based on their machine or their oil being so very specific that nothing else really works.

magnuson-moss warranty act, US Federal law, 15 USC 2301 1975

there are a few limitations to fit under the act, IE. must be a written warranty. etc.. etc. but for the most part.. yer tractor, and cars / trucks are covered under it.

Meet or exceed the specs in the warranty, and brand can't be enforced except in very, very, very limited ways.

It use to be very common for manufacturers to raise this defense in the automotive cases where I presided... not so much anymore.

The key is having maintenance records... receipts and even notation on the cover of the owner's manual.

Yea - I'm supposed to use Kubota SUDT (10W20) in my '94 L4200GST w/ 2600 hours. I don't. I use generic 'Universal Tractor Transmission and Hydraulic Fluid' from Sam's Club. It does say it meets Kubota UDT specs on the bucket (15W20). SUDT is better in the cold, since it's 10W - in the winter, it shifts a little slow for the first minute or so, then it's fine. Hasn't fallen apart yet either.

SUDT is great oil for hydro's, I ask about using it in my L3400DT, but the dealer said its a thinner oil, in my gear transmission I want the thicker oil to help slow the gears down when I push the clutch in. When I first got my tractor, I complained to Kubota that I had to hold the clutch down 30 sec. before I could put it in gear with out grinding, they gave me 2 more gal. of trans fluid to put in, now I hold the cutch down 5-8 sec., so now when I change trans fluid I put in 9 gallons, which I'm gonna do soon. If gear oil would work, I'd use that, I bet the gears would come to a stop as soon as I push the clutch in, probably everything else would stop to.

I went to TSC today with the intentions of walk in walk out, hmmm, but I ended up spending 30 minutes trying to choose between Rottela trans. fluid and Travellers trans fluid, then finally I picked Rottela only because it said its a 10w30 weight, while Travellers is 10w20. I wanted the heavier oil so in theory the gears in my L3400DT will slow down quicker when I push the clutch in, therefore if my understanding is halfway right, instead of holding the clutch petal down 5-8 sec. it will be reduced to a whopping 3-6 sec. now if I use my incredible math skills, and was to add up all that time savings and multiply it by 40years, it should figure out to be an exact total of 2or3 hrs. more or less. I should of been a mathematician.
