Drain it out. If it smells like 90wt, is thick and strings when you put a screw driver in it and pull it out , it IS 90 wt. If it doesn't smell and is lighter wt. Use JD 303.

Thanks for the lesson Reed.....so it is a separate SS gear box? I have never seen an arrangement like that. The engine/bell housing/trans has been bolted together on all other tractors that I've seen and the shuttle arrangement was encased in the trans housing.....or I assumed this to be the case. Iseki's are certainly full of innovation. I've got to be honest though, the first thing it makes me think is, I don't know if I'd put a front end loader on it.

Since Reed is familiar with Landhopes, he'll have to explain it's operation ( some shuttles work differently than others) but the shuttle shift is the lever on the left side of the steering column. It is probably marked with forward, neutral, reverse. It allows for fast gear changes between forward / reverse and is very handy when doing certain types of work...especially using an end loader. Every tractor should have shuttle in my book. All of the equipment I have personally used have allowed for using the shuttle w/o using the clutch and while moving. I think some require the clutch to be used though and I'd say it's always a good idea to be stopped before engaging the opposing gear.

I will have to back up on one statement that I made earlier now. I know from reading about equipment that some shuttles use a separate hydraulic clutch.....so when I said I've never seen/(heard of) of a hydraulic clutch on a tractor...that's not necessarily true.....they're just in the trans, I've never personally seen one or really understand how they work.:confused2: In any case, I didn't think about that or think it applied here.

Reed, it smells like gear oil and seemed pretty thick. Should i use straight 90wt or should I use 80/90 wt? I believe I run 80/90 in my 49 chevy transmission. Kern from what I have read the consensus is not to put a front end loader on it and if someone did to build a whole subframe to do so. There is no lever on the steering column only the two that are mounted in the seat area, I believe the little gear box on the back end of the bell housing is to drop the shaft height from the engine a few inches lower to go into the transmission under the seat am I thinking right Reed?

Boy, I am daft at times.....I thought Reed was saying it was for a shuttle shift. I thought the TU's all had that option...my bad. So this is simply for a step from the clutch to the transmission?

Until Reed replies and says different, I do believe it is just a step now after talking to you guys and looking at it again yesterday.

Yes, it is a step down if I remember correctly. I had a few of them but it has been some time. There is a post on here somewhere of a guy that had his TUXXX break in two using a loader. They are really a smooth machine but not really for rough work. Perfect for mowing , tilling , etc. If I remember correctly they had rubber vibration pads at key points to help even more. They look like something from a Star Wars colony. Not a bad thing.

I want to thank you Reed and Darryl for all your help and the time it took to get me on the right track. I would like to have a loader someday, but when that day comes I just might have another tractor for that. Thanks again guys!!!!!!:)
