Stripped down except for gas tank.

Interesting Tom3. I have seen the k66 units, and there are some different mounts you can buy to mount one. I don't have a 1" diameter set of wheels/tires. Maybe I could drill/ream and cut a new keyway in the 3/4" hubs. I do like the idea of the peerless having separate areas for oils.

Steep is relative mate. I would guess you need the thicker oil, like a 20-50, One guy put heavy weight gear oil in his.

Sounds like your K46 is new so use the 5W50 synthetic. You said the tires were NOT spinning so do not see why you are blaming the tires, if they were then possible tire issue. Sounds like a belt problem possibly a tension pulley loose or bad belt or wrong belt. Check the belt is routed correctly - no grease/ oil on the belt.

Yes, it sounds like a loose belt possibly. Once it is smoked, it may have bad spots on it.

Hey guys I am new and I have been reading this great thread.

I discovered my grandfathers old Snapper LE14.5 38 mower in an old garage and figured it would never start. Turn the key and it started right up. The problem is when I engage the transmission it makes this loud racket. The pulley seems to be loose. I will attach two pictures but what I am really wanting to know is if the two bolts on the bottom of the transaxle are drain bolts?

Don't know where I heard this or read on the internet but.....someone said they used K56 pump & motor assembly's in the K46 to beef it up. The K56 pump & motor being a little larger diameter plunger & spring setups. Maybe this was the special mod Derek w/Tuff Torq was doing for people? Use K56 guts in the K46. I would move forward with this if absolutely true.

There is a K46 on craigslists right now for $50 I'm tempted to buy just to tinker around with it.

Here is a picture of where the drain bolts are if has them or you want to drill your own. Sorry for the late reply but was not getting notifications.

That is interesting...are the raised boss's there to be drilled & tapped? Maybe there is a way to get a tube up to the seat with a dipstick and/or fill tube.

ETA...Just looked at my K46ac...it has those raised boss's that can be tapped.

Stripped down except for gas tank.

Looks like mine at the moment. My B&S 20hp engine boinked a valve and was burning oil at 550 hours so I found a B&S 27 hp commercial B&S that bolts right in or so I thought. The rounded cowl part on the hood needs trimmed to fit new. An easy mod. Commercial B&S is just one step under Vanguard quality. The engine has an oil cooler on it that makes me feel more secure.

Here is the part where I want to feel all witty n'shtuff. I found 2-self aligning pillerblock bearings that can be bolted in the top & bottom of the steering shaft. This will for sure tighten up the steering that now just flops around.

I really need to get my camera out there and take some pics for you all. Will do this today.

Problem is the fill port, it is right under the fan and also not easy to remove. Something might be done to rig a fill tube or there are some K46's that have a reservoir tank. But it is easy to remove and turn over to drain so not worth the mod or drain plugs, for every 3 years or so.
