Re: TuffTorq K46 / John Deere L110 Transmission Repair Guide with Pictures

Old and long thread.

Are many using the thicker viscosity oil that was mentioned... the 75-90?

i was going to do a rebuild however i contacted tuff torq and now they say you cant buy individual parts, have to get the whole kit according to the person i was talking with.

I did find a spring rebuild kit online for the pump and motor. Would this be worth doing?

I changed the oil in my 2007 x300r multiple times and it made no difference. Then I tied some 80w90 gear oil that I got from Wally World for 7 bucks a liter and it did make a difference. Instead of running 10 to 15 minutes before the machine refuses to ascend any type of incline, I now get about a half hour, depending on conditions temperature and terrain.

It worked okay that way until a few days ago when the axle broke (not related to the thick oil, I fairly certain).

Re: TuffTorq K46 / John Deere L110 Transmission Repair Guide with Pictures

I just sprung for a new K46 so I can sell the x300r, which should be okay for someone with a flat lawn. The new tranny was $900 (CAD) with tax and a local repair shop had it in stock. I installed it yesterday. Although the case was a slightly different shape, I was able to install it using spacers to lower the unit slightly. The linkage, drive shafts and pretty much everything else was the same as the original, except that there was no provision to install the breather tank (I'm assuming it doesn't need one since it did not come with the new K46 and there was really nowhere to mount it).

The problem now is the drive controls are reversed. If you press the forward pedal, the tractor moves in reverse, and vice versa. Kind of weird! There is only one drive control linkage so there's nothing to reinstall incorrectly.

sorry you had to buy a new one. If your old one isn't full of ground up gear teeth inside, it would have a bit of "core" value. Maybe about $40-50 dollars US.

You have some homework to do. You'll have to disassemble the transaxle and flip the wedge block. These units are made to run in either direction.

Yes, had to do that with the previous tranny. When I took it apart and installed a drain plug, I put the wedge in backwards. I'd rather not crack this one though, since it's brand new. Guy at the shop said he'd take it back on exchange for the correct part. Guess I should have checked first when I assumed that because it was a K46 and looked almost the same, that the drive was in the correct direction.

I asked about returning the core where I bought it but they said they didn't want it. I guess if it were an actual John Deere stealership, they may have given me a rebate for the core.

Good idea. Last time I had it open there didn't appear to be any damage and there were very few filings on the magnets.

I had to replace one and John Deere dealership did not want the core.
